I have no clue how to go about dieting. Never done it before. Never thought about it. But I have to. How do I know how many calories to eat and what forms they should take?

Good questions, and ones I'm no good with answering. lol. But I'm going to start weight watchers again and they teach a lot of that information. I've done it before and it does work, it just galls me to spend 12$ a week or whatever it is. But that's part of why it works for me. If I'm spending my hard-earned money on it, then dammit I'm going to get my money's worth!
Mike,
I posted a couple questions to you on other thread.
Personal, none-of-my-business type questions :o)
I will, ASAP, re-type that long preachy unqualified medical advice filled letter I had written to you before but then deleted before posting.
In the mean time, an easy thing to do is pick out one of the most horribly unhealthy food related things that you do - you know you gotta do something bad because you’re human :o).
You are a smart guy so I know you can think of something - pick out that really bad thing (just one thing) and stop doing it so much. Example: if you are drinking 12 cokes a day. STOP IT!! lol lol lol No, really nothing even that harsh, how about cutting the 12 cokes down to one a day and increasing water or unsweet tea up to about 11 cups a day.
Swap out one bad thing.
It sounds so stupid but the reality is - it might just be a perfect place to START.

I'm a compusive eater so I am not the best one to give advice but last week I started with a Food diary. If you track what you eat over the next two weeks you will be suprised at the number of times you take in extra calories and dont realise it.
I would say start there then look at the extras and cut them out. Look at the portion size at meals. Start asking yourself do I really need that extra helping of meat? If you raelly want extra of some thing have more vegies. Instead of a piece of cake for dessert try a piece of fruit or Jello with fruit. It's not a diet plan but you can cut a lot of calories, add more fibre which will make you feel full longer. And it will help you when yuo do find a diet plan that works for you. Good Luck
Not to long ago I read that the average AMERICAN consumes 1500 more calories a day than needed. In that same article it said that the average American also consumes 10 cokes per day. A coke is 150 calories. Other than the hours I work and a crazy schedule sodas are my #1 problem. I am tryimg to drimk more water.

A nutrutionist told me to stay away from the scales. She told to measure my waist rather than my weight. She also told me to cut my carbs in half, avoid starches whenever possible, and drink as much water as possible. This with a diet of fruits, veggies, and salads has led me to lose 6 lbs in the last 2 weeks. I laso cut out most of my red meats. This combined with quitting smoking has been the hardest for me. My family is a meat and potatoes kind of family.

I believe that there are many good and bad diets out there. To me a diet is just moderation with excercise. Skip the second helping, eat 1 cookie instead of 3. Walk, skip, or jump rope for 20-30 minutes a day. Excercise does not always mean excercise either. Maybe it is time to clean out the garage, attic, or shead. Time to weed the yard, or build that thing you have been talking about building. Just start out slow and work forward. Remember not to listen to the voice in your head that keeps saying you can't, it's too hard, I am too tired. That voice does not know what it's talking about so tell it to go away!

these are all excellent suggestions because they're so very... practical. it sounds right not to go too hardcore right off the bat, like you guys are suggesting, and sort of walk before you run.
After something I read here yesterday, I joined sparkpeople.com and started entering my food diary. Yesterday's meals were very revealing. I think this could work for me if I can keep recording and tracking. We have the same breakfast every morning, so that will make things easier--oat groats that we cook overnight in a small crockpot with water and apple juice as the liquids. In the morning we add walnuts, blueberries, fresh pineapple, flaxseed we grind in a coffee grinder, and cinnamon. Somehow my husband and I never get tired of this. It's a good start to the day. Hope I can get control of the rest of my day. I think I'm going to have to measure my portions. I have a problem not feeling satisfied after eating a reasonable portion of something delicious. I must slow down. Drinking water is also an area I need to work on.
Your present weight x 7 = Your daily calorie needs for weight loss.

Read labels, write down your calories in a journal. Be sure to notice the serving size. A coke is 2 servings, so multiply the calories x 2.

Write down what you eat for a week with no changes. Just for you to learn to know what you a re REALLY eating.

Then add vegetables, salads, fruits to your meals. There are books available that tells you what all those food calories are, or you can find a calorie counting program online.

Go slowly, one day at a time changing the balance of foods to veggies, fruits ( 4 servings) , proteins (3 servings) and then carbs, breads, pasta, etc.(3 servings).

South Beach has a good diet program on line and it offers advice, forums and recipes. So does Weight Watchers. Both of those diets are ways of living rather than a diet which implies it will stop at some point. It is more about learning to be mindful of what goes in your mouth.

Not easy for sure, but eventually it becomes sort of "what you do" and if your see it as an opportunity to learn to eat new foods it can be fun. I also plan my food out for the day. I make sure the calories add up correctly. Then I know I am good and I don't have to think about it when I am too hungry to choose something healthy.

Being active is also a way to lose weight. There are a lot of programs that work, but the key is doing something you LIKE, walking, swimming, tennis or whatever. Even mild exercise is better than NO exercise. It revs up the metabolism and you lose weight faster, plus it feels good to move.

Good for you taking charge of your health. If I don't do well one day I just try to forget it and start again fresh the next day.

Best of luck.
MIke, How are you doing with your dieting? bee
Mike, I got a brother name Mike and couldn't gain a lb when he was young, now he looks like me. I too couildn't gain when I was young. Know I'm 64 and can't take off as fast as I could. I changed Doctor. You don't have too, I did and glade I did. The first month an half I lost 16lbs. I weighed 308. Know I'm 23lb less. He said cut the carbs. He had others that did so. I found that my need for food lisned. Then I started slow back on some carbs. I'm not where I want to be yet. It said that men need 75 carbs aday. And I'm not there ether. I don't eat alot of meat and I make this great soup. Oh! I don't do fast food any more. I eat out once a month at a all you can eatery. But I don't do that. Eating lots of vegies and no fryed food.(Western Sizzlin).
If you can find good fish that would be great. Got more Mike but I filled your ear now. G
the update is bleak. i've actually put on weight since my original post. my wife is 8 months pregnant, and she's getting bigger. I think it's contagious because I am too! she has these cravings that i want to indulge in with her -- like ice cream and pasta. stuff like that. could it be that this is the reason i'm gaining, or am i just making excuses for myself?
I would say a little bit of both Mike. I have found out with my wife that it is hard to commit to anything while she is committed to the exact opposite, or vice versa. A couple has to be a couple in just about anything they do for it to have a chance of working. Dieting and pregnancy do not go together. Very soon you and your wife will be able to diet together. Until then good luck.

I joined sparkpeople a couple of months ago, but my Apnea was still untreated at that point. I am going to start using them again because I have several friends here where I live that have used the program and have lost weight
