this was a comment to a NYT story on a different sleep disorder - narcolepsy (story at http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/26/the-voices-of-narcolepsy/?hp) but i thought it would appeal equally to this group:

"If you are sleepy, having trouble getting to sleep, not staying asleep, have trouble waking up from sleep…. TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR. If your doctor minimizes your concerns FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR….BETTER YET, FIND A SLEEP DOCTOR.

Sleep disorders are sadly undiagnosed in a society that values burning the candle at both ends. There are as many as 84 different sleep disorders; narcolepsy is just one of a myriad of disorders related to sleep.

Many, many people with narcolepsy have found their inner voice of advocacy and are living full and rich lives. Daily, we defy the stereotypes set forth by the popular media. We are professionals, parents, creators, athletes, politicians, researchers, artists, children, dancers (yes Kaily…you can dance!!), students, grandparents, friends, lovers, …all the faces of society are represented in the community of people with narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is an equal opportunity disorder!

Everyone deserves good, deep, restorative sleep each and every night. Honor sleep! And if you have trouble sleeping - or live with someone who keeps you or others awake with their disordered sleep, SPEAK UP!"

Yes!!!
this is the key: "If you are sleepy, having trouble getting to sleep, not staying asleep, have trouble waking up from sleep…. TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR. If your doctor minimizes your concerns FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR….BETTER YET, FIND A SLEEP DOCTOR.
I so agree, it's ridiculous!! I FINALLY saw my new sleep doctor today. I'd been told I wouldn't see him today, that I'd be seen by an NP or Med. Ass't. Imagine MY surprise when in walked the MD, just as kind and pleasant as could be. He'd apparently reviewed my records, which included everything I could get my hands on, and said, "I just decided maybe I should come and talk with you today".

He spent an hour and 15 minutes with me!! I couldn't believe it when I realized how much time he'd given me.....he's highly-qualified which is why I was willing to wait so long to see him. I'm glad I did. He was just terrific, real low-key, listened to everything, asked a lot of questions, provided helpful answers to my multitude of questions. I'd been told by several people that he's a superb sleep MD but didn't have much personality. I didn't find that to be true at ALL. He couldn't have been more engaging and helpful. I'm feeling very, very blessed right now, and a whole lot safer.

He bumped up my CPAP pressure some and wants to watch and see what happens with that. He didn't recommend a range, at least not today.

He's pretty concerned re: the cardiac issues I have-I described a couple of episodes I've had on CPAP, which I assumed were related to CPAP--he doesn't think so, and we talked quite a bit about the interplay between apnea and CAD. I knew there was a clear relationship, but it was a little scary that he was as concerned as he was....I'm gonna wait till my other MDs and I get his report and then go see my cardiologist.....overall, to those of you who were around when I was SO distraught over the lack of an MD issue, thank you. So much. I told him about SG and that I don't think I could have made it through everything that has happened this summer without you guys. As I look back at all the stupid things that happened during all this, I realize each and every one led me to this particular doc....

Rock, my special thanks to you--you've been SO helpful with this particular issue.....as well as a # of other people who gave me such support and kept me upright.
