American Heart Association Gives OSA Patients the Finger

I have personally approached the marketing/ communications director of the American Heart Association to work together with the NYC AWAKE group to spread OSA awareness, and she essentially told us to pound sand because the connection between OSA and heart disease was not sufficiently proven. Outrageous, huh?

perhaps someone besides me can convince the American Heart Association of the connection between heart disease and Sleep Apnea? Feel free to contact the director of marketing and communication over there, Cathy Wilkins: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/cathy-wilkins/6/6b7/b02
they are happy in their nich, put a do not distrub sign on the door
99 is right. It would be too much work for her. She would have to change their web site and all their marketing materials to "Life's Simple 8" and apply for a new trademark. She likes to go home every day at 5:00.
As I said in another thread, the large non-profits get complacent, the top levels are happily gobbling up their high salaries and benefits, they've got professional money raisers raking in the money and they do NOT want the status quo disturbed. I seldom support the large non-profits any more. And I will NOT support ANY non-profit that uses professional money raisers.

There was a website I've lost my bookmark for that used to list non-profits and what % of their income actually trickled down to the "cause" and what % was spent on administration and it was quite the eye opener. That list plus the takeover of so many "humane" groups for animals (PETA,etc.) by the same crooks involved in the environmental causes certainly made me pay MUCH CLOSER ATTENTION to where my donations go!
They make it almost impossible to just send her and email. If you know of a simpler way than signing up for Linkedin, or giving away all your person' contacts, whould you please post it Mike.

Mike, I'm coming on in the middle of this discussion. I can't speak for what kind of foolishness is happening at the AHA--what I CAN tell you is that my own cardiologist who treats me for CAD, is young (probably just past 40)--he's extremely knowledgeable and well-experienced--HE knows there's a positive connection between heart disease and obstructive sleep apnea.

MY CARDIOLOGIST IS THE ONE WHO FIRST TOLD ME HE THOUGHT I HAD SLEEP APNEA AND SENT ME TO A NEUROLOGIST WHO THEN SENT ME FOR A SLEEP STUDY.

I'm not yelling, just trying to make a point.

I think it's imperative that we not throw all cardiac caregivers into a pit with whoever the idiots over at American Heart Association are--my cardiologist, and I'm certain others as well, are well-informed about the relationship between the OSA and HD. My heart doc told me he has a # of patients that are on CPAP.

AND, my sleep doc is clearly aware of the relationship as well. No doubt about it. It's his primary concern with me.....he and my cardiologist are in contact on my behalf.

So that's my two-cents worth. I'm willing to take this witchy woman on. She's probably sitting in some PR office yapping off the top of her head without checking out her information. Please let me know if you want me to follow up with her highness. Feel free to give her my personal email address and my name if she wants to contact me. lmao.......... heavens, she could google it and find out more than she apparently spouts !!!

I'd just LOVE to shake the bushes on THIS one......

McCord :-)

What! Give me her Email and I will pound her with study after study. First we will hit her with OSA and CHF. Then we will move on too OSA and left ventrical swelling leading to pulmonary hypertension. What an idiot! Does she not read?
As w/all too many of these non-profit disease/condition associations, the idiot at the top doesn't have to know diddley-squat about the disease or condition, they just have to know how to MAKE MONEY for the association - and the top level's pay packages & perks.

The AHA is a trade organization, just like all the other medical organizations. Their main goal is to protect their member's professional and financial interests. Admitting that OSA is a major cause of heart disease would be upsetting the status quo, since all the entire heart health industry is based on medications and surgical procedures. Imagine what would happen if 90% of all sleep apnea patients were found and treated...
