Washing my Headgear
Can I harm my headgear if I remove the clips, wash it by hand, then put it in nylon bag and run it through a waterless spin/extraction cycle. Then hang to dry.

I just attach it to the machine without the mask after hanging it to drip for an hour (giving it a few shakes during the hour). allowing the air to flow through for an 1 -1 1/2 hours usually does it.

Hi Cathy!
I did this too, as I mentioned in my prior post, but after I did it I realized that it might cause an inaccurate reading/report when I take the little disk to my doctor.
Does anyone know if this would happen? I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow so if I can remember to ask I will...

JUST WRAP IT IN A DRY TOWEL AFTER HAND WASHING AND AIR DRY DOING IT IN AM WILL GIVE PLENTY OF TIME FOR IT TO DRY BY BEDTIME.

I do my head gear by hand and put it in front of a fan and it drys quite quickly, I wash the plastic parts including the hose in warm soapy water once a week. Every day I wipe the gel piece in front of the foam down with a antiseptic wipe(baby wipe). I have a Fisher and Paykel Icon Nova with a Zest 405 mask. This is was the CPAP rep suggested. Does this sound right to you guys?

I wouldn't do it. It sounds like rough treatment. I just wash mine with kitchen detergent and hot water in the kitchen sink. I have had no problems.

I am an RT who works in a DME store. By running your machine to dry out the tubing, it will alter the reading for your doctor by increasing the maximum leak readings on your machine as well as increasing your average leaks which may give the impression that your mask is leaking more than it actually is. The main reason for hanging out the tubing is just so that the water will not sit or pool in the tubing which can be a possible place for "bugs" to grow, therefore, just hang it over your bedpost, shower rod, door, etc. and you will be fine. Hope this helps!

Yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking... Thankfully I did it only once. :o) Normally I hang it over the shower head but I washed it a little too late that day. Not again... :o) Thank you for the info Mike!!
Um... And I'm real new to all this... What's an RT and what's a DME store? Sometimes (who am I kidding... Most times) these abbreviations just confuse me to no end... ;o)

Please note what Mike Myers said...
[If you're using a machine that records information] to dry out the tubing, you may be skewing the information from the machine (altering the information for your doctor that is recorded on the data card/disk) because the machine [and data card/disk] may see the flowing air as mask leakage.
Maybe check with your machine provider to verify whether it's wise to use the machine this way. The other thought would be that it's putting additional "wear and tear" on the machine, possibly causing it wear out sooner?
Just a couple thoughts... :o)

just an idea for drying the tubing is to use your back up pap to dry it and your numbers on your main machine is left unaffected

I find that if I hang the tube from the middle with both ends pointing down is doesn't dry by the end of the day. I made a hook so that one end points at the ceiling and the other the floor then it is always dry by bedtime. I also enjoy (much to the annoyance of my wife) swinging the tube round my head to get rid of excess water

Diane, a RT is a Respiritory Therapist, and a DME is a Durable Medical Equipment Provider. The FAQ has a great glossary that might have some of these definitions.
