Help me choose a machine please
Hi Guys
I have a choice of machines - Philips Respironics Sleep Therapy system and the Resmed s9 elite. Id like to attach a humidifier and your opinions on the autoset or the fixed setting?
Any other machines you recommend?

Andre, can you tell me spefically what PR system you are looking at? ResMed and Phillips Respironics both make great machines. It might come down to price. I think the overwhelming number of people I see joining SleepGuide have the Respironics series of machines and I believe the software is easier to come by. You do want a fullly data capable machine- one that your doc can download data (besides compliance) and that you can check AI, AHI, RR, leak via the LCD screen. There are those on the forum more knowledgeable about what Respironics systems will do that. Lets hope they respond. I have heard good reports about the S-9 and they do have an auto series. Auto will give you more flexibility in titrating as you have a range of pressures from low to higher and the machine will calculate the optimum pressure based on your number of events. This machine ususally can be used also as a straight CPAP, thus giving you esentially two for the price of one. Both offer integrated humidification. If you have not spent time exploring the machines on the companies web sites I urge you to do so- it will give you a better idea of what you want. It's not a great deal of information and you can ask more questions about specific machines here. Also a number of the on-line retailers, cpap.com is one, give details and reviews.

Thanks Mary, just wanted to make sure they are both good machines. Based on price and what my medical aid covers my choice is reduced to the Respironics Sleepeasy for R5400 with an integrated humidifier, and the Resmed s9 elite for R8000 including humidifier. The thing is I am like most guys, I like the gadgets and the screen to report. I don't think the Sleepeasy does that as well as the Resmed based on the spec sheets.\
It is also interesting to know that these machines are avail online in the US for more than half the price I must pay here in SA, unless some knows better. Buying from overseas has also its backup and warranty issues.

any autoset machine is sitable particularly the Resmed autoset s9 or even PR auto system one which is the latesest respironics as they have facilities to to check your data check that it is auto or autoset and purchase the latest offerings available

I use a Resmed S8 as it was free to me. I am really fond of it. if I were to buy one today I believe that I would choose the PR1 autosystem because of it's user options. You can't go wrong with either machine.

Get an APAP if you can, since any APAP can also be run in a CPAP mode. That leaves all options open for some auto-titration at home in your bed in the future, even if you end up running the APAP mostly in the CPAP mode night-to-night.

Hi Andre, both machines are great. The major difference between the two is that with the S9 you can review the night before via an LCD screen. Also if you are prone to congestion or have chronic allergies the S9 would be better for you, since it has an optional climate controlled tubing that completely eliminates condensation and offers the user the best relative humidity.

You guys are all so helpful. Right now I am deciding on Resmed s9 Elite with humidifier or the PR resp Remstar auto algorithm.
My pressure setting is 11. So is it fixed pressure one or the autoset one? Decisions Decisions
Any comment on Resmed Swift FX mask?

Your insurance sounds interesting. The Respironic's SleepEasy is more of a "step-down" model then the Resmed S9 Elite. I'm not sure whether you can get your hands on software. I personally do not give software to my patients as the downloads and any pressure changes need to be regulated by the physician. That is here in the US though.

The Respironics SleepEasy is an entry level, bottom of the barrel, dumb CPAP. There is no useful data to be garnered from the SleepEasy. If the SleepEasy and the Resmed S9 Elite are your only two choices it is like you are being offered the choice between a Yugo and a Buick.
The Resmeds EXCEL in ease of access to and amount of data available via the LCD screen. No other manufacturer approaches that level of LCD screen data access.
The closest equal to the Resmed S9 Elite would be the PR SystemOne Pro. Both fully data capable CPAPs.
The closest equals in APAPs would be the Resmed S9 AutoSet and the PR SystemOne Auto.
HOWEVER, if the option is there, we are hearing good things about the DeVilBiss IntelliPAP Standard PLUS (must be the Standard Plus, not just the Standard) and the DeVilViss IntelliPAP AutoAdjust.
And there are also the Fisher & Paykel ICON Premo and the F & P ICON Auto (you do NOT want the ICON Novo).
Plus there are the new Sandman fully data capable CPAP and APAP. I've lost track of their model names since they've been somewhat "mobile": i.e. they were produced by Puritan Bennett, which was purchased by Covidien, and then Covidien sold them off to .... I think ... Sandman. The Puritan Bennett GoodKnight 420G (E?) APAP w/its Silverlining software was also an EXCELLENT, durable APAP. The professional Sandman PSG software was quite popular and respected for years w/in the sleep testing community. I have no idea where they stand now.

Hi Andre
I use a PR auto and I purchased the software so that I can monitor how I am going. This has been very valuable in helping to get my mask "right". I can check leak rates and now have it not too tight and not too loose - just right!
I live in Australia and when I contacted Respironics they informed me that their warranty was international so I could buy cheaply from the US and still be covered by warranty. I did look into it but eventually decided to buy locally.

Welcome to the forum!
I have the Resmed S8, and as a "gadget guy" I really like the S9, with the fancy look and display!
I'm coming up on one year with my S8, and it's been great.
Other than the looks and display, the best feature of the S9, to me, is the heated tubing.
Using most units, the S8 included, during cold nights the warm water from the humidifier will condense inside the tubing, causing noise and sometimes water to flow into the mask, and into your nose or mouth. The heated tubing will tend to minimize or eliminate this problem.
I've been using the Swift FX since just after it came out, and I really like it. Since it's so light, it really is comfortable. I like to read in bed, and with the FX I can use my reading glasses comfortably.
The only negative I've found using it is that it tends to leak a bit, unless I pull it really snug. But that can happen with any mask, and if I move it a little I can get it to work well, and not be too tight so as to be uncomfortable.
One "problem" I did have initially was that it seemed to have a strong chemical odor when I first opened the package, so I left it out of the bag for a few days, the odor dissipated, and it's been fine since.
