Bad insomnia, When i do sleep i do things in my sleep

I have had insomnia for a long long time, I started off taking unisom (supposedly the best sleep aid), The first handful of times it worked eh...so so. It still took almost an hour an a half to get to sleep. Then it stopped working. The bottle says take one, So i took two...that was a bad idea....I later founds out via internet that sleep aid's, antihistamine's and most flu medications have the same active ingredient
"Diphenhydramine" which in larger doses can cause powerful hallucinations. After i took the 2nd pill i felt exhausted but i felt a little strange, soon hallucinations started. After a few hours (3 or so) i feel asleep. I dicided to visit my doctor because obviously OTC stuff was not working. I didnt want to get addicted to benzo's (which is the only sure fire thing that puts me to sleep) so he proscribed me Ambien. Wow...that stuff knocks you out. But after a few months i developed a tolerance to it then in larger doses i did things in my sleep and didnt remember it (ie: eating, wondering the apartment, smoking and drinking) I had no idea i did these things until my girlfriend told me...After i found out i was drinking and smoking in my sleep i quit taking Ambien, What should i do now? I really do not want to become dependent on Xanax so i REALLY limit myself to how much and how often i take it. What should i do now?

i would imagine in this state you are open to suggestion you can mention this to your girlfriend if she says go to the toilet i would imagine you would obey or if she said she wanted relations that night you would obey. if she suggested that you give up cigarettess who knows
shaun, what a scary problem. Have you tried melatonin an hour or more before bedtime`? Maybe a dose of elavil or some other drug in that class would relax you enough to sleep. I took 150 mg of trazadone with no ill effects, took it about 1 1/2- 2 hours before bed. The only other thing I know, which you should do anyway, is concentrate on sleep hygiene.

Maybe a sleep test is in order since you think you have sleep apnea and are not on treatment.
Have a good talk with your doctor.

Good Luck,
Mary Z.
Insomnia almost always has a source. A sleep study would go a long way in helping you find it. Beware of medications in which the side effect is sleep.
