Philips Respironics System One REMstar Auto or Resmed S9 AutoSet™ CPAP Machine
My insurance provider has offered to order one of these two machines (actually I asked if they can order me one of these two after researching on the web and they said they can). But I have not found a head to head comparison. Which one do I want and why? I have been reading the discussions and I understand the mask I choose is probably more important, but that seems to be a more personal choice. This is just hardware and I am wondering which company people feel executed better.
Quite is a high priority for me.
I think the Resmed has a smaller diameter hose which seems a plus.
Usability is important.
Reliability
What else?
They seem to both be state of the art machines and I wonder what people think who have had one, or better, both.

Both the S9 and the PR S1 are new to the market. The most discussion on the two I've found has been at cpaptalk.com which is the largest and most active apnea support forum online. They can be a tough bunch over there but good people. Both the S9 and PR S1 are fairly "drastic" changes over the previous series by these manufacturers so my guess is that it is going to be a matter of time before we really know just how good these two new series of devices are.
I'm on bi-level and the S9 bi-level isn't available yet. I'm currently trialing a PR S1 BPAP w/Bi-Flex and like it very much. It is giving good therapy despite we have yet to find the pressure settings I need. My only real complaint w/it so far is the lack of backlight for the LED screen. The humidifier is easy to fill and very difficult to make leak. a problem the M Series was plagued with..
W/the earlier Resmed S8 series and the Respironics pre-M Series and M Series, Resmed DEFINITELY had the better device in my personal opinion. Sturdy, quiet, deliver good therapy, and Resmed has excelled in amount of and ease of access to nightly data via the LCD screen on their fully data capable models. One of the things I really didn't care for w/the previous Respironics series was the doggone power brick and now the Resmed S9 series is using a power brick too. Grrrrrr. Respironics did get rid of that extra platform piece they utilized in their previous two series. The S9s power brick is somewhat larger and heavier than the PR S1s.
I've used models in previous series of both Resmed and Respironics. I got excellent therapy w/both brands but found I much preferred the Resmeds simply because of that ease of access to and amount of data available via the LCD screen and frankly, I found the S8 attractive and a sturdy, excellent, easy traveler.

I am pretty biases towards the S8 autoset II. I have used this machine more than any other on the market. The Resmed software is easy to use and their customer service is way above par. I do not have any experience with the S9. Within the last year I have switched to a lab that supports respironics products. Since that time I have experimented quite a bit with the PR1 system. I really like it. This machine offers some features which I believe may carry it to the head of the pack. The software from what I hear is not easy to get, and even harder to install.
I do not believe that you can go wrong with either machine. Respironics and Resmed are the two leading manufacturers in PAP therapy. Both are fully data capable machines with wireless options for pt or physician monitoring of trends. Both come with great humidifiers. After that it is all about finding the right mask.

Ah, yes, I forgot to address that issue. It is NOT enough to say Resmed S9 or PR SystemOne. Those are a series of PAP models. You must specify WHICH S9 model or which S1 model. Both make lower end models that are compliance data capable only which you do NOT want. Trust me on this. You are going to want the Resmed S9 Elite or Resmed S9 Auto or the PR S1 Pro or PR S1 Auto.
You do NOT was a Resmed S9 Escape nor a PR S1 Plus!!!

I talked to my doctor and he does not want me to have an Auto CPAP after reviewing my study. I am therefore looking at these two in the same line. I can not find an S9 Escape, but I assume it is not one of these. I tried CPAP about 10 years ago and I am sure the machines are much better but I think I even got a bad one then. It is for my health and I do not want a supply store pawning off a machine on me that is lying around. (I think they have gotten the message that I am going to be picky)

Oh, fer crying out loud!!! What is your doctor's problem? The APAPs can be set in CPAP mode. MOST people use them in CPAP mode and only switch over to APAP mode every now and then just to check on things. YOU are the one paying for it, its YOUR health, YOUR sleep and YOUR therapy.

Judy is correct that the autos can be set in CPAP mode. If they've already approved it, you should definitely go with the auto since you or your doctor may want to re-titrate at some point in the future.
They're both great, great machines imo. Excellent data, excellent performance and both are great advances over their previous models. I'm not sure that the slim line tubing is THAT much of a selling point but one thing to consider is that the S9 has a heated tube option. This means that if you experience dryness issues even at the highest setting, you will be able to significantly increase the amount of humidification in the future by upgrading to their heated tube.
Just some food for thought but therapeutically you'll do great with either imo.

Thanks to everyone for all the great responses I really appreciate all the help. Another questions comes to mind based on the last set of answers.
What can I do with the CPAP? Will I be able to see the data it collects and if for instance it is set for CPAP mode turn it to Auto? I know my insurance requires that the medical supplier provide data that I am using the machine for the 1st 3 months, but then I understand it becomes mine. I am pretty sophisticated with technology and have a pretty good feel for health issues, not to mention being very able to find what I want on the web. Maybe after the 1st three months I want to try the machine in auto mode, will I be able to switch it myself and will I get some data from the machine that I might be able to see how that change effects my sleeping?

Mike, I'm very conservative about changing our own pressures, or settings, especially after only three months. I personally would check with my doctor and see if he/she has any reservations aout me changing my own settings. Of course, part of that depends on how often you see him as you get started. As you stated you are savvy about these things, and may feel comfortable checking out auto, or other settings, but I would wask for advice on this site before making your initial changes. Maybe a one on one with the services offered by our sleep professionals.
Do you like you doctor, have a good rapport with him? Again, I'm very hesitant to change my own settings, though many longer time users do so with good results. IMHO.
Good Luck, it's a great toy, but so important to our health.

If you get the straight CPAP, the Resmed S9 Elite or the PR SystemOne Pro, that is all you are getting is a fully data capable straight CPAP. If, on the other hand, forget your sleep doctor's bias against APAPs, you get the Resmed S9 AutoSet or the PR SystemOne Auto, you're getting a fully data capable APAP that you can run in straight CPAP mode to humor your sleep doctor and keep him happy - BUT - if you ever need or want to you can then turn it to auto mode.
The PR S1's data via the LED screen is quite limited as compared to the data available via the S9's LED screen. If the data access is gong to be important to you by all means the Resmed is the better choice. As far as the therapy from either brand, they both provide EXCELLENT therapy. I serously doubt you would be unhappy w/the therapy provided by either brand.
When it comes to the software, I am admittedly biased and predjudiced and all that for the Resmed ResScan 3.10 software. I consider it to be much better and easier to use, than PR's EncorePro 2.2.

Hi Mike, I don't have much feedback yet as I pick up my new S9 Auto next week (YAY!) but I did choose the S9 after looking at everything out there (well, as many as I could check on cpap.com that were data capable APAPs). I did find out that the S9 can run in both CPAP and APAP modes which makes me happy, and also gives data right on the display without having to have any software (which I couldn't even find a place to buy the Encore software online). Having that data was important to me as I have yet to find a doc willing to pay enough attention to my apnea data and I want to stay on top of it myself, especially with all the weight fluctuations I have had, and will continue to have (pg with twins, and then will lose weight over a year or so after their birth).
I am excited about the prospect of using a humidifier without rain out too! The heated hose sounds very good so I'll be getting that as well. (I just made sure it was on the script from my doc so it will be covered.) I'll have to post a review for everyone after I have it for a while!

Should get my S9 today or tomorrow. Not sure if it is AutoSet or Elite because the DME contact did not know, but if the insurance wants to save 5% and risk buying me a new machine in a month or two that is their choice. The whole Doctor, DME, Sleep Lab, business, is too many cooks and hands in the pot. I agree with all the emails, but also wonder why Resmed does not just make the one machine if it does both.
Now my question is how do I get the Resmed software?
The DME said it is a new machine but the technician had to take it out of the box because he never saw one before. Is there an easy way to verify it is really new? A doctor friend of mine told me some stories about people getting used machines that had not been properly cleaned. Thanks again to everyone for all the help. I should be up and running, or should a say soundly sleeping, by the weekend.
