Allergy Season
For the last couple of years, my allergies have responded well to cpap treatment and have actually been better due to the flitered air. I think I would use my cpap just to help with those, even without sleep apnea :).
This year has been a different creature altogether. The doctor has said with the really wet summer we experienced last summer and then the wet winter, and now a wet spring allergies have been as bad as she has seen for a long time.
In years past I have started a regime of allergy treatments to head off bad attacks. The regime has included Zyrtec, Singulair, and an inhaler. At other times I have had to add a nasal spray that is cortisone based. Well I let them get out of hand this year and now am having issues with shortness of breath, cough, congestion, etc. etc. I have since started on Symbiocort, Zyrtec, Nasonex, allergy eye drops, and an emergency inhaler. I will sure be glad when the pollen levels off!!
I know I could use a Neti-pot -- but no matter what I have tried I typically have a drippy nose for more than an hour with times gushes of water. I have tried different positions, the gentle blowing, holding my down for several seconds, etc. I hate the drip so don't use it.

not too much as you can have vitamine a poisioning

I use the netti. My sinuses are worse this year than they have ever been. I have been alternating mucinex with zyrtec. It took a couple of days but I seem to be clearing up a little.

This allergy season is worse than we have had in years. I would consider adding a very good air filtration system in your bedroom. Sleep with the door closed and keep the door closed throughout the day so that pollen does not accumulate in the room.

Have you tried Zyrtec D from behind the Pharmacist's counter. It used to be a prescription drug and then it went OTC. Then the FDA, in its infinite wisdom, decided that since it could be used to make Crack or Speed, they'd make it so that you can buy only 24 tablets every twelve days. Most people, like me, take them twice a day so that means every twelve days I go to the pharmacy and show them my license and then I sign my life away to get a twelve-day supply. I wish someone would tell the FDA that Zyrtec D is small potatoes to the professionals and they can't be bothered with it. What makes it even funnier is that my husband is a pharmacist! Although, I can get it cheaper at Costco so try to go down there to get it.
I, too, take Singulair, Advair, Flonase and use Advair as a rescue inhaler. I've had problems with perennial allergies for years but only developed Asthma five years ago when my Rheumatoid Arthritis was at its worst. I can't use the Netipot but years ago, when I was a teen, they used to have me sniffing warm salt and water. It didn't do a thing for me. Now if I try th Netipot, I can't stand the pain.
I've used one squirt of Afrin at bedtime for at least the last thirty years. I suppose I'm "addicted" to it, although I forget some nights. The doctors know and they say if I can't breathe when I lie down, then go ahead and use it. It's a problem if you use it twice a day ---- or more ---- because you get a rebound affect and can't breathe without it.
You're right; allergies are terrible this year. They think it will be one of the worst in history.
Thanks for the idea of raising my hose. It's one of those obvious - "DUH, why didn't I think of it?"- moments. I'll start tonight and hope it works. My nose is getting really sore and my sunglasses hit the very area that's reddest.

With that much of a problem and relying heavily on drugs, you would be wise to be evaluated by a good allergist and discuss Allergy Vaccine Therapy (immunotherapy).
It has been a very effective cure for many people, myself included.

Sorry to hear about everyone's allergy woe's. Having grown up with allergies/asthma since childhood I have lost track of how many times I have had a sinus infection, a head cold, bronchitis or pneumonia but KNOCK ON WOOD!!!, since going on CPAP last May I can only recall a couple days last memorial day weekend where I had congested sinus's. I haven't had a cold, sinus infection, ear ache...nothing. Outside of itchy eyes a couple times, my allergies have not been a problem at all....I even stopped taking my twice daily prescription for Advair and don't carry an inhaler everywhere I go. I LOVE MY CPAP!!!

I to am having the worst year with allergies!! For the first time in the two years I have been on CPAP I am walking around in a daze. I am waking up tired and can't think clearly.....I can't believe I use to live like this all the time!! I am afraid the CPAP is not working anymore because of the severity of my allergy I might take some benydryl tonight and see if that helps.. I am using zytec but it seems to have stop working. If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear it....I won't do nasal sprays I was addicted to Affrin and had a bad time getting off it (not looking to do that again)

Since I added an air filter to the hose of my Cpap machine, I have been able to breathe through both nostrils. I don't remember ever being able to do this before. The filter I buy is from Fisher and Paykel and is supplied to hospitals. It is able to filter all particles of 2.5 microns and above. It can filter out many particles smaller than 2.5 microns. It is able to filter out many viruses.
So, my advice for all of you hay fever sufferers, is to investigate these filters. They are made by Fisher and Paykel and are part number RT019. They fit between your hose and your mask.

Yes, You put up the pressure by 1. The engineer at Fisher & Paykel told me this.

Been down that road twice. Once in 1990. I drove an hour and half one way to go to a good allergist -- he was head of the ENT clinic at Missouri University Hospital. Weekly allergy shots didn't work and after two or three years was told that there is a percentage of people that they simply don't help.
In 2000, because they were getting worse I tried a local allergist. I live in the mid-west and am allergic to all trees that grow in this area, grasses -- including those that farmers use for hay, molds, cats, dogs, dust mites, and the list goes on, plus many chemicals.. I am also allergic to wheat, soy, milk protein, legumes (including peanuts, all beans), lemon, coocnut, pork, beef, chicken, shrimp, peas, potatoes, and some others that I can't remember and don't have my list handy. The allergist said I was the worst he had ever encountered in his practice. Told me to strip my house of carpeting, upholstered furniture, curtains, etc. This was when my kids were still home. I tried the shots again for 2+ years and had side effects from them and it was decided to stop the shots.
I have been told by both allergist my immune system is on hyperdrive. I take Zyrtec daily year round. If I miss a dose, I end up really sick for a few days and typically end up at some point in the er. I am suppose to keep Benadryl with me at all times and an epi-pen. Benadryl and many of the decongestants make me super hyper and raise my blood pressure so I stay away from them if at all possible. If I take a Benedryl later than say 2 pm I end up pacing the floor for the night with the jitters.

I live with one of my allergies...my wonderful cats. I don't wish to get rid of them so I live with the allergy. I have found that with my cpap, I don't have as much trouble as I used to. I do get the itchy eyes and such when I first wake up, but once I get moving, it seems to get better. I don't have much trouble at night especially if I sleep on my left side. Not sure why, but it makes a difference. I have tried the neti pot with mixed results. My husband swears by it, but I had trouble getting it to flow through my sinuses one time and just gave up. It did help to clear things out, but it is too much sometimes to deal with for me. Hope everyone has an easier time soon with allergies....take care!
