I want a wireless CPAP. Who's with me?
Hi all. I just started on CPAP a few weeks ago for obstructive sleep apnea, and it's great and all, but I'm so aggravated with that tubing. Are there any geniuses out there who can develop a wireless CPAP??? I'm thinking there would be a recorder chip in the mask apparatus that would wirelessly transmit info to the machine... I'm still not familiar with what parts of the machine do what (like I said, I'm a newbie), but some kind of filter/pressure/humidification gadget also on the mask would be superb. There's gotta be some kind of material that can handle all that, with today's technologies, right??
Assuming some company ends up manufacturing something like this, would there be anyone interested in this besides me?? I'm just curious.

I'm totally with you on wanting this. And if it's available, I'll be the first one to rush out to get it. I think the big engineering hurdle will be generating enough Air Pressure without hooking up by a tube to a big flow generator. That's one lay person's analysis. Maybe more technically inclined/ engineering oriented people have more to say about it.

The battery alone would make it too heavy to wear. If you want a humidifier, the weight of the battery just tripled and the weight of the water when you went to bed would be about 250 grams (over a half a pound).

Well, it's 20 watts to power the machine (http://www.cpap-supply.com/Articles.asp?ID=128); there are portable 20 watt batteries but they only last maybe 4-5 hours. There's a product that combines a 100-watt inverter with a lightweight, high output 4.0 amp hour lithium ion battery pack and it's under 2 pounds (about the weight of a netbook I think). I'd be happy to have a wire going from the mask to the portable battery pack if needed. WAY better than that annoying tube, if not completely wireless. As far as water weight, that product would be able to handle the extra power to humidify the water, and the water could go into maybe a flexible neck ring or wrist ring or something (like an inflatable inner tube; I've worn wrist weights way heaver than half a pound). Earlier today I read about some non-toxic eco-friendly reuseable sandwich bag somewhere that's kinda like plastic except launderable, so there is some decent material available to ensure water purity.
Actually, someone could design a small widget in the style of the thing all the wires plugged into during the sleep study (the thing you wear around your neck if you have to whizz in the middle of the night). That didn't bother me at all, and I'd be happy to wear something like that on a lanyard every night, with a wire from that to the mask... if that widget could combine recording/programming in an area the size of my iPhone (or iMiniPad now, whatever) with the rechargable battery pack, and have a smaller shorter tube going to the water supply to the mask, I think that could be a LOT easier to deal with than a 6 foot long tube that gets in the way every time I toss and turn.
Does any of that make sense at all?? There's got to be a more efficient way to achieve the same thing with smaller portable items!

Just occurred to me that instead of a wearable water thing, that could go into a specially designed pillow (like an ergonomic pillow that's made of pressure-sensitive foam, buckwheat, whatever conforms to the individual), and be removed for cleansing and filling. Since the pillow's right there, having the portable battery / recording gizmo / humidifier / pressure dillie integrated with it somehow would eliminate a lot of length of tubing and wire. I'm just thinking out loud, but it sounds feasible to me.

No thanks. I will stick with what works.
A 6 foot hose, to me, seems simpler than all the gizmos that would have to be dealt with in your design.
And if all this is incorporated into a pillow, what size would that pillow have to be and how heavy would it be? I can't envision it as being comfy to sleep on.

Hoffman Laboratories used to make the BreatheX which was a wearable CPAP. There is information about it available on the web. It appears that it either didn't work very well or not that many people were interested.
Look at the sizes of the smallest CPAP flow generators available right now; you are not going to be able to get much smaller than that with current technology.
I will stay with the hose for the foreseeable future.

you are losing sight of everything here and saying cpap is the b all and end all of everything
for now that is the case
on going advancements are taking place all the time and everybody wants things to work but greedy people are in it for the money only
it would be nice for a proper on going solution to sleep apnea that we all can subscribe to

Linda your idea is fascinating. the engineering problems our however overwelming. Run with it though. You could be the one to figure it all out. Do not let anyone persuade you if you believe in the idea. Every great solution started out as one good idea.

Hi Linda. I am with you on the wireless C Pap. That would be wonderful! Now I could handle that. No more getting caught in your tubing, no more knocking the thing off the knight stand, etc. You could take it everywhere you go without all that bulk. Wouldn't that be nice? Yea, with all today's technology, you would think someone would get a brain storm and figure out how to do this, wouldn't you?

I have also found ResMed to be responsive when I wrote them with needs such as patient software.
Good luck with it and I sure would appreciate it if someone told me exactly what isisyou're proposing.

Hi Mary Z. I think what Linda is talking about is something portable where there are no hoses attatched like the huge ones we have on our C Pap and Bi pap machines. That would be great to have somethng miniature that you can take everywhere you go and not have to lug all that stuff around everytime you go somewhere to spend the night. Maybe, someday someone will invite something like that which will be light weight and easier to manage. Who knows? There is hope, huh? It may sound undoable to us, but who knows what the future holds for such technology and devices?

Thanks all - yes, I'd LOVE for someone to design something smaller and less tangly that works. It just seems that someone should be able to do this now, or in the near future, at the rate technology improves. Great to see I'm not alone in wanting something like this!
FYI, the machine I have is the REMstar Pro C-Flex + and System One Heated Humidifier, and the mask is a Zest nasal mask.
