Anybody, besides me, have "tongue scalloping"???
I read about this on Dr. Park's website. It's apparently a marker for possible apnea. News to me! I've had it for a long, long time and always wondered about it...Steve told me it's pretty common. Who knew?
Described as "scalloping" shapes, along both sides of the tongue. That's EXACTLY what I have and I'm wondering if anyone else does....

I might have one scallop. Funny no doctor ever asked to see my tongue before....

Mary, I have them all along both sides. No one, including my dentist and PCP has ever looked or asked me about it!!!

Susan you are not alone I have had tongue scallops for awhile. I mentioned them to the dentist and my doctor both had no answer for me. I clench my teeth and thought maybe that had something to with the scallops. my tongue also burns along with scallops. It is interesting that scallops are a marker for sleep apenea.

Hi Carl! Long time, no talk to! THANKS for your reply--I've been vindicated! Yeah, who knew about the scalloping thing? My dentist and my PCP, both of whom I've gone to for a long, long time, have never said a word.
Leave it to Dr. Park to know this apnea stuff in depth.

The 'scalloping" appears to be the impressions of the upper teeth, possibly the result of the tongue's position during the course of the night.
When was this picture obtained? Early AM upon waking up possibly?
Does it disappear after a short duration?
Could be possibly be same as if you fell asleep on a textured blanket and wake with the material pattern embossed on the skin?

I have never heard of this. I wonder if it is indicative of a tongue being crowded in the mouth cavity and the teeth leaving the impressions. I know if given enough time your skin will contour to certain shapes if held in that position long enough. My mother was a chain smoker and I swear she had permanent indentations from holding the cigarette a certain way.

Hi Dan--I have no idea about the teeth thing. My dentist has never said anything about it being related to HER work. MD hasn't either (?). I'm certain they don't know about it being a possible marker for apnea....
NOT MY TONGUE IN THE PICTURE!!! Mike posted it after I posted the Discussion. My tongue looks pretty much like that but not as inflamed-looking. I've had it for years. Not sure when it started but I noticed it a really long time ago. It doesn't change and doesn't ever go away. Not related to waking up whatsoever, at least not with me. It always looks the same., occasionally a little redder but it doesn't hurt. Definitely fits Dr. Park's description of "scalloping".
Gotta say, I'm getting a kick out of wondering how sleeping on a textured surface could cause this. I'd have to have my tongue dangling out like a big dog and have it pressed up against the texturing!!! lol
