Any tips on how to deal with a cold and CPAP mask? I have been coughing a lot at night which is causing mask leaks. Should I be concerned with the leaks?? My DME couldn't answer that question..which doesn't surprise me at all....You guys have been the best at answering my questions..pretty soon I will have to start paying ya'll...I'll do it in peanut butter or chocolate chip cookies though..and for those that are on a diet...well....I'll pay you in fruit..lol

I'm sure I was told to lay off the CPAP with a cold. It's an uphill battle. Besides, you're putting germs into the system.
the best way to treat a cold is to drink plenty of water as this hydrates the scilca in the nose
i reccommend at least two glasses and if possible more

this reduces by half the cold you may have
Get a bottle of Vick Vapo rub. Slather your feet with it then put socks on. Then take that bottle, leave the lid off, and place near the back of your CPAP machine. Do whatever will work to allow you to continue to wear your CPAP. Think about it. Sleep apnea is do to an obstruction. A stuffy nose will make it worse. So try and wear your CPAP. Getting good sleep is part of the healing process. And if your worried about germs, cleaning your mask as recommended should remove that concern.
now thats a good idea
perhaps it will help with my halitosis

I am currently using the Quatrro Mirage full face mask. I know that I was mouth breathing last night because at some point I woke up with a case of the burps. Also (as embarrasing as it may be) I found myself drooling ~Blush~.
I have a call into the doctor to see if he can give me something to help with the congestion. I can't take over the counter decongestants due to the other medication I am on. I'm making sure that I drink plenty of fluids, and I'm trying to rest as much as I can. It would be easier for that to happen if the next door neighbors weren't having gutters put on their house..Oh the noise!!! Thanks to those that have given me their input thus far :o)

If you have a full face mask either as your backup mask or your primary mask, wearing that should help. At least that way you can breathe through your mouth without too much difficulty. Drinking plenty of fluids and taking some form of decongestant might be a good idea as well. Nasal flushing may help too. As my chiropractor used to say your cold will last about 14 days if you treat it 2 weeks untreated. :)

I find that I do much better with the nasal pillows whenever I have a cold that causes me to cough a lot. In fact, I prefer the nasal pillows all the time.
That's why I won't even use it if I'm sick. How are you going to breath thru your nose? I use nasal pillows, tried that. And if you have drainage and flem , it's better to be using an expectorant (without suppressent) and coughing it up into a tissue, not recycling it somewhere trapped in the mask, then where? the stomach? (sorry if being too graphic. :~))
