During the fair last week the old mare got a bad rope burn on her rear pastern. We washed it clean and have been keeping ointment and bandage on it. Sometime between last night and this afternoon the bandage came off. This is bot fly season here. When we went out this afternoon to feed the area was full of dirt so I got out some Dawn dish soap and a bucket of warm water to soak the foot. Before putting her foot in to soak I hosed it off - good Lord maggots had already started on it! Just tiny ones but still .... GROSS! So into the bucket the foot went, followed by a gentle scrubbing w/a brush. Good healthy skin and flesh, thank goodness! So much for antibiotic ointment and wrap! So back to the old farmer's remedy ..... powdered lime.

I sure do wish Murphy would find someone else to pick on!!! He's wearing his welcome thin around here!

Judy--I went to the State Fair last night. When I started reading THIS post re: I thought, for a nano second you were talking about me!! Or yourself!!

ROFL !

The old gray mare syndrome, eh, Susan??? *giggle*

Groan. Granddaughter just called. I've gotta load her saddle and her riding prosthetic in the car and pick her up by 8 AM tomorrow. *sigh* We're going down to try out a new mare. She's hoping to lease her for the remainder of the show season. *sigh* That is NOT even a humane hour of the morning to have to be on the road! But we want to get thte riding in before the heat sets in.
We are home to the Missouri State Fair!! Our fair runs from Aug. 13 to Aug 23.

Lived here all my life and plan on by passing the fair this year!! Way too expensive for me.
Hi Carol--I hadn't gone for years--used to go every year but just haven't in recent years. It was really fun! We ate our way around the Fair and then rode the tractor-drawn shuttle all over for ages. We bought a pass for it for $3, got unlimited riding, and it was well worth the $$. Isn't that pathetic that some of us are old enough to get a kick out of riding on a tractor-powered shuttle?? '
Our IN fair runs the same days as yours. Man, it was hot!!!, but lotsa fun...

Judy--LMAO re: the old grey mare!! Yep, that about covers it!!! Except I'm not gray, thanks to my brilliant hair stylist who keeps me looking presentable re: gray!!! Thank God for the "bottle".
I wonder how many "old goats" are on this site....I be one of 'em, for sure!! And damn glad to be alive at this point!!

I'm with you on the early a.m. deal. I NEVER make plans for morning anymore, 'cause I never know about the sleep/energy situation ahead of time. I'm always glad I didn't plan!!

Well, not anymore, but used to be I was in a coma in the morning. I'd slither down the stairs to the frige, crack a Coke, slither up on the kitchen bar stool, light a cigarette and enjoy my coma. DON'T turn the lights on, DON'T talk to me, DON'T EVEN breathe the same air I do. I was good for about an hour or two like that before I'd slither off the bar stool, up the stairs and into the shower and FINALLY start being human for the day.

Now, I still prefer no noise, confusion or to be active first thing in the AM, but it doesn't last as long and I'm not in a coma anymore, except that I really have become a stick in the mud and do NOT want to leave the house and yard. I LIKE it here, I LIKE my house, I LIKE my land, I LIKE the peace and quiet ....
