GERD and Cpap
Hi everyone I saw some posts on this but I didnt find where anyone else had this problem. They other night I was sleeping quite good and I inhaled stomach acid. OMG I thought I was a goner.
I am on an antibiotic for another reason and I think that may have been the culprit complecated by a home made pizza my hubbie fixed us for dinner. Anyways the cpaps off until I see the sleep doc on Tuesday. Karen
ps I wake up with the mask off a lot of times and readjusted it to my face and now its on all night again.

glad you're having a better time with wearing the mask all night. not sure you need or should go without your cpap until you see your sleep doc, but hey, i'm just a patient. maybe you're right. did the doctor advise you to do this?

Avoid eating too close to bedtime and you should be alright. Stay away from spicey food or meats.

Hi not sure if it was just your sleep apnea, my husband was diagnosed. If it was GERD maybe a new drink product can help email me for more info. One person I know had basically immediate results and noticed a difference for days just after drinking 1/2 a can.

Well eating to close to bed time is a common problem. Has this happened only once? CPAP shouldn't be the cause how long have you been on cpap? Are you experiencing stomach bloating with the cpap, it is a side affect to get some of the cpap pressure in your stomach but esophagus opening pressure is 23 to 25 cmH2O therefore doesn't happen that often.

apneac events can cause GERD. Generally this happens when the tongue or tonsils are the cause of obstruction. When the obstruction happens your lungs continue to pump out co2 and bring o2 in. the lungs will suck your stomach juices up to your throat or mouth.

I had this happen a few time, especially late during my pregnancy (notorious time for reflux). I also found that it was a LOT worse if I was lying on my right side. I only lie on my left side or my back now and that seems to have fixed it (along with taking zantac daily).
It's a horrible feeling for sure!

I read somewhere that GERD and apnea are worse during pregnancy.
Honestly I might have read it here. I have read so much and been studying so hard I could not remember a source if I had to. My wife is making me buy another hard drive this week just for sleep.

A while back I was having trouble with a constant cough. Went to the doctor and he said I was okay but should see an allergist. During the time before my allergist appointment I did some research on coughs linked to apnea and came up with Silent Reflux, LPR. I think this is what was bothering me. I started taking Tums right before I go to sleep and my cough has gone away. I have seen the allergist and she said that it was a distinct possibility that I had LPR and has sent a request to my primary physician for evaluation. The allergist told be to take Prilosec instead of Tums but I don't like the sound of the possible side effects. I also don't know if taking Tums every night all the time is good for me either. Maybe someone here could suggest something safer? Just thought people here might like to know about it.

My wife had really bad GERD while she was pregnant. We should have bought stock in Tums. Our doc told us that they were a great source of calcium and she could take as many as she wanted. SOOOOOOOO there I was at 4am looking for tums at CVS.......................2-3 times a week.

I have read that taking Tums can cause a B12 vitamin deficiency because it needs the acid to be absorbed. I'm hoping that my taking it only at night will not cause my acid to be too low for the B12. Especially because I started taking a separate B12 vitamin just yesterday because it is suppose to help with memory and perimenopause symptoms. Sometimes I don't know weather it's the bipap therapy not working or it's the "peri" that has got me so messed up. Probably both.
Did ya find the Tums at 4am?
