It is well known that sleep apnea can affect the eyes, especially glaucoma.

There is no scientific articles about cataracts and sleep apnea. Actually we don't know quite how cataracts occur.

I can find many individual cases, but no science.

When I was diagnosed with sleep apnea about 6 years ago I also got an eye examination, which showed an incipient cataracts. I had by this time no sense of this.

Today I have big problems with my cataracts, and within the next 2 weeks I will have a surgery for this (with multifocal linse).

Personally, I believe there is a connection, but I can not find any proves for this.

I readm something a while back about some research. Ill see if I can find it for you Henning.

I have cataracts, not quite mature enough to remove.  I spent a lot of time in the sun without sunglasses so I don't know if it's connected with my sleep apnea.

Cataracts can certainly be hereditary. Both my father and my grandfather had cataracts, but at age 20 to 25 years later than me.

Here where I live, we haven't sun enough that it may be an explanation. Incidentally, I have always used sunglasses.

Cataracts may be an aging problem, like so many other symptoms of Sleep Apnea, but unlike other symptoms cataracts will not improve with treatment for sleep apnea.

i have been diagnosed with sleep apnea for about 8 months now and finally have adjusted to the situations as some of you remember i had a hard time accepting the idea of sleeping with a mask on , i too have been diagnosed with cataracts but my eye doctor says they are not ready for surgery yet . there is also something else i am wondering about, been doing some research about thyroid issues and am wondering if there is a connection to sleep apena. i am going to ask my doctor to test me for thyroid problems , she may think i am a wako looking into a excuse for my weight but i wonder if it is common to sleep apnea and thyroid problems. my sleep specialist told me i had a very narrow airway and have seen that is a connection to sleep apena and thyroid problems , still having problems sleeping as far as falling asleep , do not see much difference in being able to fall asleep even taking sleeping pills so i would like to see how many people that have sleep apnea and thyroid problems . just a thought here .

thanks

Got cataracts, hypothyroid, and insomnia.

In the old days it was said that cataract should be mature before the surgery.

This is no longer true. Many people get this surgery - with multifocal lenses - just to get rid of glasses - even if they do not have cataracts.

The risk is very low, and it is one of the most performed surgery in the world.

Henning

I didn't know that Henning, I have been waiting for mine to mature.  The doc did ask me this last appointment if I was ready to get rid of them, but they're not bothering me, yet.  I have 20/30 vision with my glasses.

there is a link between apnea and diabeties

and with diabeties and eye problems

every year i have a retinopathy examination to check my eyes because of my diabeties

I have also waited until I now feel bothered by my cataracts.

I use reading glasses and computer glasses, but new glasses do not make it better longer. So I have decided to have the surgery done now.

At the same time, I have chosen multifocal lenses, which means that I probably can totally see without glasses. It would be nice.

With a single fokal lens (standard with cataract), it will still be required with reading glasses.

It was my first thought. I've also read about the link between sleep apnea, Diabetes and the eyes.

I have been checked for diabetes.

every year i have a retinopathy examination to check my eyes because of my diabeties

for years i was negative for diabetes  because of the shortfall in instructions to follow

the instructions said not to eat for x amount of hours and that was all

me being me i used to go to x amount of hours and past y amount hours where as i should have been more than x and here the problem it should be less than y

when i was in the x-y range diabetes was diagnosed

i understand that more than ten hours and less than sixteen hours are correct but this need to be checked by your self

Here in Denmark we have a lot of focus on diabetes. We have the largest producer of insulin in the world - Novo Nordisk.

It is one of the largest companies in the country, and they do a great job of screening for diabetes.

Therefore, we have a longstanding focus on this area and it is almost standard procedure that the doctor checks for this disorder.

They also have so many new product, so you today can live a normally life with diabetes.
