Crackling in throat.
My daughter was eating pop rocks on Easter and I casually mentioned to my husband that that's the sound my throat makes when I breath in. I never thought to mention it before. Has anyone else experienced this? I looked it up and it's called Rales, crackles or crepitations. Doesn't sound good.

How is your overall health? chest pains? are you a smoker? How long has this been going on? Have you recently had bronchitis?

Hi Rock,
I'm in good health, high blood pressure, overweight but working on it. Very slight chest pains, sometimes. Don't smoke (yuck!). I think I've had the crackling for some time now, 3mos? More? I can't really remember. I didn't think it was that important. Don't think I've had bronchitis though I did get very sick with the flu on Valentines day and have been coughing ever since with some yuck coming up. The crackling came before the flu. I went to the doctor for the cough and he said I was fine.. I forgot to mention the crackling at that time. I only notice it when I'm sitting quietly reading at night. My husband said not to worry about it (he used to be a respiratory therapist) and if I went to the doctor again he would just tell me to do deep breathing and use a...can't remember what it is called, it has a little ball in it to encourage you to breathe and to exercise. My husband did say though that he thought it was strange that I had it given that my machine has a pressure of 18/14 and I use my humidifier. I guess that's one of the therapies for rales. What do you think? I'd hate to go to the doctor for nothing. Takes an hour to get there. I also told the doctor that I sometimes have trouble swallowing. Usually on the first or second swallow. Any kind of food or drink it kind of just get's stuck and I have to wait for it to go down. Doc said not to worry about it.

Well I would definately listen to the ex-RT and your Dr. Just keep an eye on it. If it is something that continues to bother you I would go to the Dr. No one knows your body better than you do. I think that as humans we forget the fact that our own bodies will tell us when there is a problem with it.

Doc says it's excess mucus, post nasal drip, caused by allergies but, I don't know. I don't really have too much trouble with allergies and can usually breath through my nose fine at night. I occasionally use a neti pot. I found, while researching some GERD information for a friend, information about another kind of acid reflux called LPR or silent reflux. I have so many of the symptoms. Chronic cough, trouble swallowing, asthma like symptoms, wheezing, post nasal drip.
Just thought people on the forum might like to know about LPR. I don't remember reading about it during the discussions on GERD.

My husband is an ENT. I had the pop-rocks sound in my throat when I go to bed, only when lying down. Had that for quite a while before mentioning that for about a week I had a sensation of really dry, sticky pflegm in my throat and a need to constantly clear my throat and consciously swallow very hard to get rid of it for only a moment. I told him I thought I was having an allergy/hay fever attack because of constantly clearing my throat. My husband instantly said my problem is acid reflux. He started me on the Costco version of Prilosec, about an hour before bed each night. It worked instantly. Comes in a purple box, drug name starts with an "O" - can't remember the whole name and the Costco website is currently down. I take one pill per day. This is a really easy diagnosis - take the pills, if it stops, it's reflux. If it doesn't stop, tell your doctors what you tried and let them figure it out. Personally, I think my husband is a genius.

Sounds right to me. Even though ur nose isn't stuffed up u can def still have a post nasal drip. Neti pot and/or sinus rinse is great. Hypertonic saline spray is great no limit on amount of use. Did the doctor give u allergy meds or nasal spray to treat the post nasal drip? And it's amazing how this can cause reflux when there's too much of a build up. I'm dealing with the same problem was having reflux and found out this was why. If left untreated i have seen it in some cases eventually lead to asthma. Crazy stuff. I work at a pulmonary rehab and sleep lab and it's amazing the things u learn that would never think of otherwise.

You know it's funny, just after my last post about this in April I started taking Tums before I went to bed and, ta da, cough went away. Thought I'd cured myself. Well here I am again. About 2 weeks after the start of school my 6yr old brought a cold home, I got it too. Wasn't too bad as far as colds go, pretty mild. But, I've been coughing again ever since and have the crackling too. I still take Tums before bed.
My daughter was having problems last year too and we've had her to a lung specialist several times. She coughed for months! No crackling though. We were going to start her on asthma medicine but decided to see how she would be when we went on vacation to California at the beginning of summer. Well guess what, we went on vacation and her coughing went away! Sigh..now she's coughing again too. We just talked to the GP doctor this week because she got the flu. When I told him that she has been coughing again for some weeks now he said, after looking at the lung doc's notes, she is diagnosed with asthma. Mother's intuition...I just don't think it's asthma. Why are we both coughing? Maybe it's mold in the house or something. He said no, you probably have asthma too.
Sigh.........

It wouldnt be Crepitations, unless you had a pnuemothorax (highly doubtful, haha) and were leaking air into your skin....
Its probably nasal drainage or just thick secretions that may be stuck in your upper airway.

First let me ask what testing has been done. Have you had a chest X-ray? Do you have any swelling in your ankles? Do you take any breathing meds? Have you noticed any neck vessel distention? Meaning, are your neck veins more visible? Have you gained any wieght you just can't take off since the flu? Have you had your heart checked?
You mentioned a bad flu right after you started with the crackles. I don't want to throw up a huge concern but.... what you have mentioned leads me to believe that there is a possiblity of pulmonary edema secondary to CHF. If you haven't had any of the aboved mentioned tests then you should. Sleep apnea is one of the leading causes of Conjestive heart failure. Do yourself a huge favor and take the hour drive.

Nope no chest Xray. Yes, swelling in ankles. No breathing meds. No to neck vessel distention. No to weight gain. No to having the heart checked. I did talk to the doc about the crackles and he said not to worry. I guess I should insist on a full work up of my heart? I don't know what pulmonary edema or CHF is but I'm sure going to look it up! Thanks.

Tums contain calcium. Calcium stimulates acid production. Take a once-a-day antacid.
