There was an article in my local newspaper concerning sleep apnoea and bananas. I tried to get a copy of the complete article, but grandchildren got to the paper first.

It said, " The humble banana may be a lifesaver for sleep apnoea suffers. Australian researchers have found that downing a nightcap of a banana smoothie may keep people's throats open and reduce the risk of choaking.

Preliminary results of a study from Dr Tom Van der Touw of the University of New England, NSW, show the phospholipids or fatty acids in bananas stay active in the mouth for six hours. Phospholipids from other sources keep the throat open, and the makeup of the molecules in bananas is similar."

Interesting or just another snake oil treatment?

Wonder whether Chiquita is funding the research. Doubt it. Even they were, might be something to it. Have to defer to the more scientifically knowledgeable amongst us to know whether Phospholipids can actually pull this off.

How crazy would it be if Chiquita puts Respironics and ResMed out of business? They didn't see that coming. That's for sure!
What I got out of the link Patirck provided was that they were able to determine and prove that the phospholipids were still present in the mouth after six hours. The research still needs to be done to determine if their presence in the mouth and/or throat negates the need for xPAP.

Pardon my skepticism, but too often if something sounds too good to be true ..... *sigh*
I agree with Judy. The article just di not provide enough evidence that related to apnea. I will definately follow this for a minute or 2 though. Could be interesting.

looks like the next step of the research isn't to determine whether CPAP can be traded in altogether for a banana smoothie. rather, it's to determine whether CPAP-ers can use lower pressure settings on their machines if they also consume the banana smoothie before CPAP therapy.

Hmmmmm. I wonder how fattening those nightly banana smoothies would be? Besides, I really do NOT like bananas nor their smell - except in banana nut bread. Yummmy!!
Yeah, uh huh, jnk, go ahead and blame your wife's smell-er. You just don't want her catching you drinking those banana smoothies!!! And I notice you didn't address their affect on weight and weight gain ....... besides your banana breath would give you away!!!!!
