My husband finally got a cpap. He has a comfort gel nasal mask and it isn't working for him. The chinstrap just isn't keeping his mouth closed enough. He has tried my hybrid (it came with bigger sizes that I don't use that fit him). It almost works, but he still has leaking issues. He has an appointment to get a new mask on Tuesday. I'm looking for suggestions. He isn't a terribly active sleeper, but does move some. He has facial hair and a biggish face.

So far, he tries to use it a little each night, but doesn't last long. While he uses his machine, it does seem to help. He even seems to snore less after he takes it off. We just need to find the right mask so he can use it all night. Any help will be appreciated - after all, you all helped me so much when I was getting started!

I use the Respironics FitLife Total Face Mask (not the one size fits all) because it does not touch the bridge of my nose.  It is a large mask, fits above the eyebrows to the middle of the chin. I don't know how it would be with facial hair.  Good luck finding the right mask.  I tried a bunch before this one.
Nasal pillows don't help much if your mouth falls open when you fall asleep.  I have the same problem with getting a mask to seal because I also have a beard.  The mask I have rubs the skin off the bridge of my nose.  I try to cover the nose with tape, band-aids, etc., they all end up hampering the seal and letting air leak.
I was so disappointed that the nasal pillows would not work for me after my pressure was increased to 10. Using the Quattro FX with some leaks in eye area.  Have just ordered a SMALl headgear to see if this will help.  I have to tighten the medium so much as my face is small.

Ginny: I only sleep on my side with the Quattro FX. The key is getting the right size and tightening the mask correctly. The mask is designed not to be too tight.

I am on my third mask and hate it already.  I tried the FX Quattro and Quattro masks but kept getting dry eyes.  Now I am using Mirage Liberty Full Face mask with Nasal Pillows which I get leaks constantly.  I might try nasal pillows with chin straps next.
I love the nasal pillows but when my pressure was increased to 10 my moth opened so had to stop.  Very disappointed, too.

I would pay $500 for someone to fit me correctly  and keep on working until we found the answer or I learned exactly how to put it on right!!!

Ginny: Somewhere either on this site or ResMed there is a demo on how to properly put on the Quattro FX. The mask is put on differently than other masks. On the very rare occasions that I wake up due to leaks, I have to unstrap the mask and start over. This is the first mask in three years my wife doesn't complain about the leaks or that I am still snoring a little.
Thanks Gordon, I have watched the video.  I think the directions that came with the mask differ, too!  That does not make sense.  Last night I connected the mask to the machine and turned on before putting on.  Did the best yet.

I also have tried different masks and I have been using the Quattro for a few years now because I breathe through my mouth and we've had a hard time finding masks that work for me. Most leak because I have chubby cheeks. So far I have had the best luck with the Mirage Quattro.

It sounds like your husband has a similar facial situation that I do. I originally used the Ultra Mirage 2 nasal mask with some success. I briefly tried the Swift FX nasal pillow but found that I was taking it off at night. I am currently using a Mirage Quattro Full Face mask and love it. It works well for mouth breathers like myself and is actually more comfortable for someone like me with a beard as well. It takes slightly more adjusting of the straps to get it to fit properly than other masks because of the larger seal area but it fits fine.
I have used them with some improvement.  I wonder how Karen's mask liners (padacheek.cm) are?Thinking about ordering one.

When he gets his new mask he should try a Quietus liner, it will make all the difference in this world
Thank you all for your help. I sent this thread to him before his appointment. He read through it and we decided he should try the Quatro. He said it felt fine at the appointment. We'll see how he does with it at night.
