Saline nasal spray
Has anyone had success with the saline nasal spray? It seems I wake up often because my nose is stuffed up. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have congestion problems myself, and use the NeilMed NetiPot saline rinse before going to bed. I don't use it every night, but on the nights that i'm congested, it really helps. I've also heard good things about NeilMed's sinus rinse bottle. I bet a ton of people here do the same thing. and of course, there no dumb questions here...

I have used the saline nasal sprays off and on for the last few years. I have severe allergies and use it in the spring and fall when I have the most trouble and in the winter if I am really dried out due to the dry air it helps.
Make sure it is saline nasal spray and not the medicated ones. The medicated ones can cause a rebound effect that makes things worse.

I had the same problem, but if you will get some sea salt, arm and hammer baking soda and water, i am giving you a remedy for this and if you use it faithfully, you will soon see a great improvement or cure. Desolve 1 teaspoon sea salt, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, in 1 cup hot water. When water cools, put it in a saline bottle or even a small water bottle with a hole through the cap. Lean over bathroom sink, spray solution into one side of nose auntil it runs out the other side, washing all your nasal cavaties, repeat to other side. Do this morning and night. You will see relief. But, you may have drainage 15 or 20 minutes after washing.

My Mother had a home remedy for most sicknesses. I have always had allergies, followed by congestion, then Sinus problems and untilmately Chronic Sinusitis and 5 Sinus Surgeries. Mother believed the answer to those problems was to sniff a salt water solution from a cup. I coughed & sputtered, and didn't get much relief. I discovered small saline nasal sprays - they helped some. On my first appointment with my Sleep Doctor, she couldn't help but observe my nasal congestion, & suggested I get the Grossan Hydro Pulse Nasal/Sinus Irrigation system, it was available on the Internet. It looks something like a water pik. The machine has a 16oz container, she said to fill it with Distilled water, one teaspoon of Sea Salt, a pinch of baking soda, or one of the packets of Sinus Rinse (NeilMed is one). Bend over the bathroom sink, put the irrigator tip in one nostril - turn the pump on at a slow speed, and irrigate the nasal tissues. The fluid exits the opposite nostril. Then switch sides and repeat. For my heavy duty congestion she suggested using the pump 3 times per day.
When I use it as she prescribed, my congestion has improved - not totally gone away, but improved. When I don't do it on a regular basis, The congestion comes back. This is the first winter I have not had a long lasting Sinus Infection. When I started using the nasal irrigator, I didn't turn it down enough, and I thought I was being water boarded. That sensation went away when I turned it down.
There are several systems available, & an attackment for the Water Pic is sold. I have only tried the Grossan, it works well for me. If it quit working, I would order that or one of the other systems as soon as possible. I tried the neti pot, and the NeilMed plastic bottle, but the irrigation system works best for me. I forgot to mention why the doctor recommended distilled water, it is because of the all the chemicals the water departments have to put in the water, & if you are trying to clean your nasal tissues, tap water could easily by irritated by any chemicals. .

I use the saline nasal spray almost every night. I have for years. It does seem to help. Another thing that seems to help is use a small smear of Vicks Vapo Rub just inside your nostrils. That will open you up quite nicely.

Irrigating before bedtime solved my situation, I have seasonal allergies, and that causes stuffiness, but I rinse and I am fine! Neilmed is my brand.

My hubby has severe allergies and chronic sinuisitis. He uses the NeilMed sinus rinse every night and he thinks it helps him a lot. I don't have problems anywhere near his level but I have found since using the CPAP that my nose gets stuffed up. I spray my nose with a simple saline spray each night and then blow my nose. It does seem to help -- and really, it can't hurt, unless the solution becomes contaminated or something.

wondering whether the vicks vapo rub has any adverse side effect. see my "afrin attack" post for the kinds of things I'm concerned about.

Along with the saline solution and a small amount of Vicks Vapo rub, that I mentioned earlier, I also use a vaporizer in the bedroom, especially in the winter. That seems to make a difference too. When the weather gets more humid, then I don't need the vaporizer.

My grandad used to eat Vicks Vaporub whenever he felt a cold coming on. Yep, that isn't a misprint he would take a finger and scoop out some of the Vicks, put it in his mouth, and swallow. He carried the small jar in his shirt pocket almost always. When us kids were little my mom didn't like Vicks and used Mentholetum. To this day I don't care for the smell of Mentholetum but love the smell of Vicks. I used to dab it inside my nose (never ate it). I stopped doing that when reports came out that petroleum based products such as Vicks can cause certain types of pneumonia.
