If you have been diagnosed with both diabetes and sleep apnea, which one was diagnosed first, and how long was it between the diagnosis for each?

How long do you think you had one or the other before it was diagnosed?

I have not been diagnosed with diabetes, as my latest fasting glucose test was 86.  However, both of my parents have/had Type II Diabetes, and from what I've read, this makes my chances of getting it at around 76%.  Since I have been diagnosed with Complex Sleep Apnea, I am particularly concerned to do what I can to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes.  I have read that there is a relationship through the body's systems that make both OSA and Diabetes patients more susceptible than average to heart disease and stroke.  As Dr. Steven Park refers to a "continuum" of disease development, I conclude that the potential for me to develop diabetes is significant and relevant as much as the potential for heart disease and stroke.  Fortunately, the things I can do to help each of these diseases likely has a positive affect on them all.

For now, I am working on managing my cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure, since, for me, those numbers are showing noticeable elevations that could put me in the "pre" stage for each.  I prefer to make gradual changes to having sudden scary numbers demanding drastic changes.

Hello;  I was diagnosed with diabetes 4 years ago, and with sleep apnea 4 months ago.  I quit sleeping, which was my main symptom 5 years ago.  I had gestational diabetes 30 years ago, and I didn't gain weight until after the diabetes diagnosis.
I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes before being diagnosed with apnea.  I went on insulin about 6 months after starting cpap treatment.  It was about 5 years before I was diagnosed with apnea.
i was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 5 years ago and just last night had my first sleep study and was diagnosed with sleep apnea so 5 years difference in the diagnoses of the diabetes and sleep apnea
I was diagnosed with diabetes 20 years ago, and sleep apnea two weeks ago.
I was diagnosed with OSA in feb 2009 but probably had it for approximately 10 years. I was diagnoseD with type II diabetes tentatively in Dec 2010. One more a1c over 6.5 would seal the deal. My pcp suggested cutting back on sweets and would schedule smother a1c test in a few months. I scheduled sn spt. With a Nutritionist and stsrted counting carbs, keeping a dietary journal and over 3months lost 30 lbs. During this time, my pcp suggested that I see. Diabetic nurse and start teasing so I would know what triggered high blood sugar. I felt great for about 10 days, until the back pain started (another story) and a diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma. I am being transfused as I type this. I will get a stem cell transplant in Oct. Oh, the diabetes (FBS)had been gradually creeping up for about 5 years and my pcp did mention it each year. I didn't take action.

I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea about 10 years ago, but always had it.  Even as a young thin kid, no one wanted to sleep in the same room with me.  I was diagnosed with type II diabetes around 7 years ago.

i was diagnosed the same time for both

last year  april 2011 i found out that i have sleep apnea with bracadia

I was diagnosed with T2 in 2007. A couple years later I volunteered for a health study and was told I had mild to moderate sleep apnea. My GPs response was that I must have known and should just live with it and lose weight. More recently my husband insisted I follow up as I was snoring more and stopped breathing often. Took 6 months to get into hospital for a sleep study (I live in regional Australia) and was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and told to get on CPAP. Have been renting equipment and trying various masks since Dec. Sleep doc was not impressed with results and put me in for a second study. No matter how much the pressure was increased nothing would overcome the blockage if I was on my back. Despite problems continuing with CPAP I have felt better when using it but have discovered that I have been gaining weight. My allergies and chronic sinusitis are better, perhaps because of heated tubing, filtered air and humidifier .
