I have not been diagnosed with diabetes, as my latest fasting glucose test was 86. However, both of my parents have/had Type II Diabetes, and from what I've read, this makes my chances of getting it at around 76%. Since I have been diagnosed with Complex Sleep Apnea, I am particularly concerned to do what I can to prevent or delay the onset of diabetes. I have read that there is a relationship through the body's systems that make both OSA and Diabetes patients more susceptible than average to heart disease and stroke. As Dr. Steven Park refers to a "continuum" of disease development, I conclude that the potential for me to develop diabetes is significant and relevant as much as the potential for heart disease and stroke. Fortunately, the things I can do to help each of these diseases likely has a positive affect on them all.
For now, I am working on managing my cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure, since, for me, those numbers are showing noticeable elevations that could put me in the "pre" stage for each. I prefer to make gradual changes to having sudden scary numbers demanding drastic changes.

I was diagnosed with OSA in feb 2009 but probably had it for approximately 10 years. I was diagnoseD with type II diabetes tentatively in Dec 2010. One more a1c over 6.5 would seal the deal. My pcp suggested cutting back on sweets and would schedule smother a1c test in a few months. I scheduled sn spt. With a Nutritionist and stsrted counting carbs, keeping a dietary journal and over 3months lost 30 lbs. During this time, my pcp suggested that I see. Diabetic nurse and start teasing so I would know what triggered high blood sugar. I felt great for about 10 days, until the back pain started (another story) and a diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma. I am being transfused as I type this. I will get a stem cell transplant in Oct. Oh, the diabetes (FBS)had been gradually creeping up for about 5 years and my pcp did mention it each year. I didn't take action.
