What do you do besides 'PAP to ensure quality sleep and successful therapy?

I have always touted using the machine 100% of sleep time would solve everyone's problems with feeling better with 'PAP therapy.  A couple of posts recently made me realize that sleep problems aren't cured by 'PAP alone.  We need to have quality, restful sleep.  This can be a lot of work.  Sleeping pills aren't the answer (though some people need them).  We may need to revisit sleep hygiene  and really study it and be sure we're doing all we can to achieve good sleep.  The intervention of a sleep specialist may be necessary.  Perhaps a therapist for a time to deal with stress and worry that keeps us awake at night.  I am studying my sleep hygiene, making sure I go to bed tired.  I've  weaned off lunesta, but still take benadryl because I'm scared not to sleep.  I think I need to wean off the benadryl- perhaps with a cup of bedtime tea and a conscious effort to put worries and concerns of the day behind me.

What are other peoples thoughts?

Oya. Are you saying that if one tapes mouth shut or mask does the sealing that the brain does not get its rest as these actions defeat the autonomic nervous system?

Hi Ellen,

Thank you for your comment, >"if one tapes mouth shut or mask does the sealing" could get deep sleep is OK, but people are still waking up in middle of night and having chronic fatigue with using those should be self-check what I mentioned.

You find many friends here who tapes mouth shut or mask does the sealing correctly but can't sleep well, don't you?

My sleep specialist told me to never tape my mouth shut since it can be dangerous.  Yowers I could not do that anyway since my nose is practically unbreatheable due to poor structure and bad allergies.

FWIW, I taped my mouth shut for a while. I'm here to tell about it!

as a professional i hear this mouth taping practice all of the time...the safety part of this to remember is: your respiratory system has to let off carbon dioxide somehow, if it doesn't, life can be altered (not for the better) or ended. That is simply how our bodies work.

While the idea of mouth taping can be funny, the potential injury from such a thing is quite dangerous and no laughing matter...

I know, i know....some things are just funny...

i have to let my inner nerd out and about every once and a while...

Thanks for the warning, Bill!

If your nasal structure is that bad the only option is surgery for better PAP compliance. I don't know why the sleep community is so opposed to any surgery but nasal surgey done be a good surgeon can do wonders  and is your only real hope. Also treating the allergies and inflamation is important. A big part of these "allergy" problems is actually acid reflux either GERD or silent reflux. If your sinuses are real bad I would recommend stop eating 6-yes-6- hours before bedtime. Make sure that stomach is empty. That way not much acid gets into the sinuses during sleep.

Love the inner nerd!

Mouth taping is a basic premise of the Buteyko breathing technique. The practitioner I spoke to suggested folding over both ends so that I could get it off quickly. He also said some people were more comfortable with the tape placed vertically. I tried it for a couple nights and got really good AHI results (I can breath thru my nose) but I found it really painful to rip the tape off and have not continued with it .
