what cpap machine should i request????

i guess the sleep doc got enough info from my sleep study......he is prescribing me a cpap for my UARS.....my pressure setting is 7cm....can anyone give me some advice on what type of machine i should request??? or if i can request anything....when i asked the doc about data capabilities, he said they are all data capable but they only record hours used.....i know thats bs......but anyway the dme is supposed to call me by friday.....any advice?????? thanks

I want to be able to say go for the new Philips Respironics System One Auto CPAP. My only hesitation is that it seems to be harder to access efficacy data from the PR System One than from the previous generation Respironics machine, the M Series Pro. The reason? The PR System One isn't compatible with a patient accessible software program, as far as I know.

So my recommendation is to get either the Respironics M Series Pro Auto Adjusting CPAP with A-Flex; or its ResMed equivalent: the S8 AutoSet II with EPR. Make sure the doctor's script has one of those machines specified on it, as well as the additional requirement: "heated humidification".

By the way, unbelievable that your doc had the you know what to say that all machines are data capable and that they only record hours used.

What Mike said! :^) But also.....

In my opinion, the most important piece of equipment in treating sleep apnea is a well fitting and comfortable mask.

I'm glad you are being treated for UARS. It's often ignored.

Have we heard from anyone whom has the new respironics system? I would wait on that one. Respironics has a new system coming in right behind it. Y flex technology, whatever that is.

Mike the machine he needs to ask for is either the Pro or the auto with a-flex.

Sleepsurfer, either of those machines record useful data that will help you find effective treatment.

I am anxious to hear from others on the new System One setup. I do think that there will be those that have the capabilty of finding a way to access the data (at least my hope). I have even thought about talking to my pcp and seeing if she would be up to ordering a copy of it for me (you didn't hear that from me -- shhhh).

Rock can you tell us more about the Y-flex technology you wrote about?

Do a search on Dr Barry Krakow. He's done quite a bit of research into UARS and I believe he may have a preference on what type of xPAP to use for UARS. I just don't remember whether he recommends only an APAP for UARS or whether there is a specific brand and model he prefers.

It seems to me in the dim recesses of my mind that Dr S Y Parks who often joins us here had a teleconference w/Dr Krakow but I can't swear on that. I do know Dr Krakow posted quite a bit about UARS at cpaptalk. I think that was last year but time can pass me by, it might even have been in 2007 he was posting quite a bit about it.

Did I forget to mention that Dr Krakow has a good sense of humor?

Carol I wish that I could. My boss is experimenting with the machine now. I have not even seen it yet. We are supposed to get a full briefing on it sometime soon.

It looks like it might be a BI-LEVEL, not an APAP, that Dr Krakow prefers for UARS. See this at YouTube

And I THINK I am overlooking Dr Park and his interest in UARS. I saw a couple of brief references to him and UARS when I did the google search on Barry Krakow UARS. I'll go try a search on Dr Park and UARS now.

personally, I would buy the new PR System One APAP, and figure out a way to get the software, even if it's only distributed to clinicians -- where there's a will there's a way.
