Thank you for visiting the SleepGuide discussion forum. We are committed to allowing freedom of expression for our members, and that includes maintaining a safe space for people with opposing views to express themselves. We get posts from patients and pros all over the country and even the globe, so needless to say, people come with different viewpoints on Sleep Apnea. We see this diversity and variety as a real strength-- dialogue and debate are an integral part of the educational process, as well as an important tool in exploring different sides of complex issues.

SleepGuide Code of Conduct
Okay, I know we said we want you to have the freedom to express yourselves. And we do. But a few rules never hurt, right?
• Be nice! No flaming. Many posters come here for information, not to be called names.
• Please respect the different backgrounds and education of posters—especially when it comes to diverse perspectives on Sleep Apnea from patients and pros alike.
• No one needs to hear you correct them on proper grammar and spelling. Let’s talk Sleep Apnea, not the difference between affect and effect.
• Wanna talk about religion and race? Well, we don’t. We wanna talk about Sleep Apnea.
• Don’t gang up with other posters against one person. It’s not nice!
• Did I mention you should…talk about Sleep Apnea? Cool! Now get to it and have fun!

I will need to return my cpap because I lost my insureance.& my job because of my health. So look's like I will go back to what I was doing before I got my cpap unit, that was nothing. That's life for me..
Greetings,
I just got my CPAP last Friday and am now learning how to live with it. I have been very excited to finally get my apnea treated since my wife pointed out that I would stop breathing during the night. It took several years to finally get to this point where I am now being treated. The sleep study I had done over a year ago rated me with a apnea / hypopnea index of 15.4 and a REM apnea / hypopnea index of 59.4. I'm assuming from what I have been reading that these are pretty high. I didn't actually get the results until I had the CPAP fitting study done a month ago.

Unlike most people I have been reading about I didn't feel I was missing any sleep. I felt rested in the morning and had no issues with driving or work. I am hoping that by being treated now that I will discover what rested really means.

I found this forum because I had an issue with my nose being bruised and making it impossible to wear my mask so I hope I have that fixed so I can continue to use it. I won't give up (my wife won't let me).

My pressure is at 9 which doesn't seem to cause much issue for my wife continuing to sleep with me. If it did I'd find a solution.

Anyway...Just wanted to fill in a few details of my background and I look forward to learning as much as I can about this topic.
Hi, I'm David. I have had sleep apnea for years now. I have tried bipap and cpap and haven't had much luck with them. I am exploring other forms of treatments right now.
I also blog about sleep apnea

thanks
Hello; I am Robert, age mid-70's. I have been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, obstructive, I think. I stop breathing during the night. I signed up for Sleep Apnea therapy and tried the full face mask and the smaller one too. Both caused my Glaucoma pressure to dramatically rise and purple blood blisters on my lower lip. I gave up that theraby. I now sleep wtih breathing strips across my nose. Like the ones athletes wear. It helps me sleep without snoring and reduces the sleep apnea incidents during the night. However, recently I have had several incidents of Atro-fibrillation, a problem that occurred after open heart surgery in 1998. They occur at night, so I think they are probably brought on by Sleep Apnea incidents. I have an appointment with my cardiologist next week. I am glad that I found this forum and look forward to interaction here. Robert, Kentucky
Hi! I'm Ercilia. I'm in my early thirties, female, slender...in other words, yet another non-stereotypical apnea sufferer! I was diagnosed late last year and have had my cpap since December. After months getting used to my machine, I now can't imagine life without it...although I still have trouble with it and could use any advice. I'm so happy to have found this forum, it really helps not struggling through this alone.

Hello! My name is Cindy and I am from Elkton, MN. My email addy is: cjketchum08@yahoo.com if anyone would like to just chat or send me info or whatever. I am new to this site and to sleep apnea. It took a house fire and me almost losing my life to realize that there was something wrong with me. I was having alot of trouble catching my breath when I would walk 10-25 ft...my heart would race, my legs would swell, I found/find it difficult to walk a few steps w/o having to stop to catch my breath...I was tired all of the time, I discovered that I could almost fall asleep at the drop of a pin...I would wake up in the morning with a nasty headache, so I went to my dr. for a routine visit and my husband brought it to the dr's attention that he was having to nudge me to wake me up b/c I would stop breathing. Plus I would snore very loudly keeping him awake. I know that I was awake like every 2 hours & during the day, I would fall asleep just riding downtown to the post office or to the gas station, etc...I didn't know that that was the problem...so I did their procedure...wore the monitor for 24 hours, then got the report with not-so-good news from the respiratory dr. and then sent to Mayo Clinic to see a specialist to set up a time for sleep clinic...Dec. 26, 2008 I was report to Mayo's Sleep clinic...did that...the specialist told us that I had Obesity Obstructive Hyperventilation Sleep Apnea...I was close to being narcopletic and being on a ventilator. I could & would fall asleep anytime/anywhere. We were told that this could kill you if left untreated. Ok, the first sleep clinic showed that I stopped breathing 163X during the night...so I was sent for a second...it showed that I stopped breathing 180X during the night...red flags were flying and people were scrammbling...I was also told that I have atrial fibrillation along with diabetes & several other things. I got the CPAP machine w/the face mask...it took me some time to get use to it but it is going ok...I feel as tho I am sufficating tho when I wear it...I need to see the respiratory specialist about getting the nasal cannula...I think I will be more apt to using my machine. I have applied for social security disability b/c my dr said that I would only be able to work like 2-3 hours /day w/limited exertion. I have been approved and am just waiting for instructions on what to do next. I will do whatever I have to in order to survive this b/c I have 2 beautiful grandchildren that I want to get to know and see get married...sure asking alot aren't I? If anyone has any advice or if there is anyone that I can maybe help...feel free to contact me. I am not the only one in my family with this...all 6 of us have it and so did our dad along with 2 of my brothers-in-law.
"This too shall pass..."

Hello there,
My name is Karen and Sleep Apnea has changed my life in ways I had no idea it would.
I was diagnosed 5 years ago when I had a series of really not very intelligent thoughts. I went to my primary care physician who has known me for 19 years and said, "I am not this stupid, what is wrong with me?"
He asked some smart questions and CPAP was the end result.
I started CPAP and immediately had some minor issues, like strap marks. I made a pad for my straps, used that set for almost a year and then thought perhaps others had a need for the padding on the straps too. I looked online for the solutions and found nothing. SO then I did a bit of market research, did some design work, did some patent application writing and then brought them to market. A business was born.
4 years after that the PAD A CHEEK products are world wide in distribution and although we are still a very small company, we are growing. I absolutely love helping other sleep apnea patients sleep more comfortably. My mission continues to be to help people with sleep apnea sleep more comfortably and not to grow to be a huge business.
Now my brain is working because of CPAP.
Hi. I am new to all of this...so new I am still waiting for my titration results and getting my machine. I guess I am living in blissful (actually, not so blissful) ignorance and am eagerly waiting to get my machine and start getting some rest. I felt really decent the day after my titration study and couldn't believe I had to wait another two weeks for the results. I am expecting to hear from the doctor today or tomorrow.

Everything was so foreign when the doctor explained the results of my study. All I really remember is hearing that I had over 600 apneas during REM and my oxygen level got as low as 65.

I am not sure what to expect, but am really positive and hopeful.

Glad I found this site and hope to get lots of info from here.
Good Morning from the United Kingdom!

I am from Oxford and my special interest area within sleep medicine is oral appliance therapy. I have manufactured these since 1994 and look forward to trying to help snorers and their partners understand the DO's and DON'Ts. To this end I will be providing a weekly critical commentary about snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea/apnea news, products, services etc. on my blog: http://anti-snoring-devices.blogspot.com and also checking in here to offer help and advice to those that need it.

However, please remember I am a medical technical professional - NOT A DOCTOR - so please consult a medical professional if you have ANY concerns over your night time breathing and sleep.

Looking forward to this!

Greetings, my name is Brian. I live in Orlando, Florida. I am a marketing professional working deep inside of the fifth largest university in the United States. I am 36, married and we have two small children (2 and 4 years old). I have been on a quest for the last 18 months or so to improve my health (the old "I want to live to see my children grow-up" thing reared its head). I have had a number of diagnosis over the years for my "laziness" and lethargy but I am currently being treated for OSA and ADHD. Additionally, I recently discovered that I have a digestive disorder and I am working with my physician to determine if I have Celiac Disease, wheat allergy or gluten-intolerance. I am currently gluten-free while we figure this out.

I'll go more in depth about the OSA/ADHD/Celiac issues, if anyone is interested. I suspect that at least one of these is yet another incorrect diagnosis. I am glad that Mike found me on Twitter and invited me over. I look forward to learning with you.
