Hi everyone!

I will be having surgery this coming Thursday 10-28, due to enlarged turbinates, a deviated septum he "might" have to repair, and sinus infections that have homesteaded.

Does anyone have any ideas or hints you can give me on this recovery and the use of cpap afterwards. I have heard I can't use it for a while, and then I have heard I can use it in a day. So I thought maybe some of you might have some first hand knowledge and I would be so grateful!

In one way I am looking forward to it, but another way, I ain't, you know what I mean?

Thanks....

Peggy

purchase an oral appliance
cherry tart juice is good to get rid of homesteaders
99,thats a good idea about the oral appliance.

I already take the cherry juice for arthritis and gout, didn't know it would help with those infections(homesteaders) per say!
Does anybody have any words of wisdom that I can put to use? I sure would appreciate it...
I had turbinate reduction surgery and an S-shaped septum corrected. No packing was used, just some splints to hold the septum straight. The surgery was on a Monday and the splints were removed by the doctor that same Thursday morning.

I was told by the surgeon that I would not be able to use CPAP for three weeks. The day of the surgery I used it at my normal bedtime and did not miss one minute of use thereafter.

I had been using a Hybrid mask with nasal pillows but the light pressure on my nose needed to be avoided. So for a few weeks I used a traditional full face mask.

Pain was minimal and I never opened the bottle of codeine the doc sent home with me. Thursday when the splints were removed I went shopping and to lunch with my wife. I avoided heavy lifting and bending way over to lift for a couple of weeks.

I am happy every day that I had the surgery.

Good luck.
Hi Peggy and friends, I too am schedualed for surgery (nov 2) I have a polip ,twisted septum and large turbinates. Doc said It wont fix my apnea but possibly reduce pressure needed. They are going to keep me overnight because of the apnea .Are you schedualed to stay overnight too? They said to bring my machine with me but do not see how that will help if they put stuff (packing splints) in. Good Sleep, Chris
You know? I told him I use a cpap and he did not even seem to hear, just said, thats fine. I guess I need to call and get a better understanding on this.

I also am wanting to do this without using prednisone since I have high cortisol levels, so that is not going to help with the swelling, which in turn will hinder the breathing even worse....

I don't have polyps but I do have the swollen turbinates and such....
Hi Peggy. Only just caught this discussion due to BIG computer problems for the past few days. Firstly, to say Good Luck tomorrow......

I'm also due turbinates + septum surgery in a couple of months (I think, if I dare LOL) so will be interested to hear how you get on. Have a look for a recent discussion on here which I started for advice on surgery. The most important thing to remember is it's 'your' body so make sure you nag and nag until you get all your questions at the hospital answered properly of what to expect, and make sure you're comfortable with the replies. Best of luck..........
That is good advice. I just wonder how the cpap will relate in all this. I have heard someone say they used it that night, and then someone else say it was a couple of weeks. I use nasal pillows so I don't see how that air pressure blowing in there can be good for that area.

Do you have a link for that discussion on surgery. I would like to check it out.

Thanks.....and hopefully will have a good report to give you!
Here's the link Peggy with some comments re CPAP from Dr Park + others... http://www.sleepguide.com/forum/topics/ent-appointment-which?xg_sou...
Also have a look around www.doctorstevenpark.com
I shall be thinking of you and look forward to hearing your news.

Hello everybody.  I hope everyone is off to a great new year.

Well, I had the surgery. Ended up having a bone spur and polyps which did not show up on the cat scan, as well as a deviated septum repair, and very enlarged turbinates reduced, and the old homesteading infection cleaned out. In a about 50 days, I have  a flair up of a sinus infection. AGAIN. have had 26 days of Levaquin, which did nothing to rid the infection. SO apparently I have built up a resistance to that. Will have to go another route as far as antibiotics go.

I am having SO SO much sinus drainage, mostly post nasal, and I do not really remember this before starting the cpap machine. I am just wondering if anyone else out there is having this problem. (whenever we say " I wonder..." my "smart" son will say "Do you wonder or do you want to know?"  which is really quite funny)

Any input is greatly appreciated, as always.

Hi Peggy, Was wondering how you were. I went for presurgical testing got sneezed on and picked up a whopper of a sinus infection...zpak cipro four different sprays later Im still having rubber cement like discharge. We have not done a culture I am not sure why not yet.I thought troubles were going to be fixed with your surgery .Have they cultured your infection?? Good Sleep ,Chris

Hi Chris. Thanks for thinking about me. I am still having so much PND that I feel like I am choking at times. Have been off the Levaquin for about a week and will go back Friday for a Culture to see what will work. I still am wondering if this CPAP has anything to do with this, because the drainage has really been increased since beginning using.

You might need a stronger antibiotic than a z pac.

take care.
