excerpt from an article on Near Death Experiences:

Nelson thinks that near-death experiences are part of the dream mechanism and that the person having the experience is in a REM, or "rapid eye movement," state.

"Part of our 'fight or flight' reflexes to keep us alive includes the switch into the REM state of consciousness," he said.

During REM sleep, there is increased brain activity and visual stimulation. Intense dreaming occurs as a result.

And the bright light so many people claim to see?

"The activation of the visual system caused by REM is causing the bright lights," Nelson said.

Physiologically speaking, this may very well be true.

I'd rather keep my sense of knowing that we're all going to a peaceful place when we die......just my comfort piece, I guess......

Interesting article.
As a pedestrian in a crosswalk, crossing a four lane street in Tucson, AZ I was hit by a drunk driver on 12/05/1994. I had this experience after the impact and awoke while being wheeled into the trauma center. I had it again several days later after coming out of a surgery and awoke is ICU.

My sleep studies state my rem sleep is < 5%.

I don't believe I was asleep!
When your dead your dead
no thoughts no actviity you are dead
people near death do halucinate or after ressus do halucunate ether before or after
99, Thanks for your reply......interesting opinion from one who has not had the experience......everyone's entitled to an "opinion".

Don't Thank Me!
You're Welcome!
Working in Neuro-Science I am aware of the affects of hypoxia as it allows brain tissue to die. However following Sudden cardiac Death episode
I was met by Natan who guided me through the several minutes before the shock that awakened me from the eternal sleep. So maybe REM is activated during the consuming finger of death, but I believe in an eternal father and the afterlife.
Amen
