I'm very new to this site so forgive me if this has already been discussed but it is too important to not share.  I have discovered, if I get on my computer for any amount of time at all 3 -4 hours before bed, it will dramatically screw up my ability to sleep!  When I researched this, I discovered all kinds of websites validating this.  If I get on the computer at night, I'm lucky if I stay asleep 3-4 hours.  If I don't get on the computer at night, I'm out for at least seven hours with zero nighttime trips to the bathroom..

It seems the blue wave light emitted from the computer monitor will really interfere with your brain's natural sleep mechanisms.

I WAS looking to buy a Kindle but I'm postponing this purchase until I find proof that this device will not impair my sleep like a computer monitor does.

I even tried wearing tinted glasses while on the computer in the evening.  Didn't help.  So now I do all my computer stuff in the wee hours of the morning before I go to work.  If you want to look it up yourself just google "computer monitors interfering with sleep".  You'll get dozens of web pages to view.

Hope this helps someone.

The sad thing is... if someone came on here and said that tapping your head and rubbing your belly for 5 minutes made you sleep better, most of the people on this thread would try it and report back positively.

A lot of this is placebo effect - if you believe you will have a good night's sleep then you will have a good night's sleep.

>>> the dust helps increase or magnify the radiation.

I have to say that is patently one of the most ridiculous things I've heard in my life.  Put that up there with the little green alien men aren't letting you sleep theory.

Well Bob, I guess I'm having a hard time understanding your comments after all the documentation that I posted with links to studies and such on most of this subject.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but let's face it, just a few years ago, many poo pooed the CPAP machine and the idea of sleeping with air blowing in your face all night. I think most on this forum will attest to the fact that the CPAP has changed their lives to varying degrees. And for many, it will save their lives and give them more time on this earth like I'm sure John Candy and others would have liked.

The fact that the forum exists, and allows people to talk about all the possibilites for better sleep is a Godsend, and all should always discuss what they feel might work for them with their doctors. But the fact remains that many doctors are not up to date on the cutting edge of sleep problems, and pushing this information at them will force them to become educated to treat their patients better. A win-win for all of us.

The reason why so many people will "try anything" is because they are desparate, and need help. Hopefully, if enough people talk and encourage them, they will find the help they so need. Belittling people's judgement may only discourage them from reaching out and seeking help. I don't wish that for anyone, please, do not think your question is too dumb or that you just don't know how to ask for help so you won't. If you don't get the help you need from the first person you turn to, KEEP GOING!!! You are the most important person in your life, don't give up on you!

Bob, why don't you research things before you make disparaging remarks? CRT screens are not like LCD screens; 99 is right. Look here; no little green men there. http://www.blackcatsystems.com/science/radiation.html

There are other sources on this as well.

Sherry, I appreciate your posting those informative links.

Take a bow, Sherry. The links you posted were really interesting and useful. THANK YOU!

I wonder if this applies to a television also?  Anyone know?  I stopped using the computer in the evening as this is the time I spend with my honey.  She needs the TV on when we go to bed to unwind and get to sleep.  We set the timer, but of course it adds a lot of light to the room.

I just added a discussion for sleep reports for people who have turned off their computers in the evening. Maybe people can comment on television use, too.

I wish this were true, Bob- that believing you will have a good nights sleep guarantees a good nights sleep.  There is sound theory I believe behind sleep hygiene and a good nights sleep. There is also no substitute for personal experience over an adequate period of time.

I don't think I would fall for your I'm sure tongue in cheek example of patting my head and rubbing my belly before bed.  Most of us on this forum are smarter than that, falling for ridiculous claims for better sleep.

Bob, I even went to a sleep disorder clinic that misdiagnosed my OSA and gave me all kinds of tips and tricks to sleep well for the insomnia that the doctors claimed I had.

I followed everything I was told to do.

Nothing worked even though I "believed" that the doctors knew what they were talking about.

My belief did no good.

Having finally learned the cause of my inability to sleep well (a friend diagnosed my  OSA when we shared a hotel room in late May which prompted a visit to a different sleep disorder clinic), having finally learned the real cause, I sleep much better using a CPAP. I'm also learning that good sleep hygiene counts, too.

But belief systems?  Nah. As Mary said: Would that it were true....

Thank you everyone for your kind words. Loss of sleep has to be the most horrible experience a person can go through. Not so much just a night here or there, but the continued night after night until your brain clouds and your heart tries to burst out of your chest from the fatigue. This is the kind of sleep loss I dealt with. The best we can figure I went through this for over 10 years before I was finally diagnosed. I had seen Cardiac specialists, Internal Medicine specialists, Holistic Doctors, Chiropracters, you name it, and NO ONE questioned me about my sleep. I was convinced I slept fine, except I spent 9-10 hours in bed every night and woke up every morning dragging worse than the day before.

It took going on a cruise with my daughter to celebrate her graduation, and sharing a very small cabin, for her to tell me what was going on. I knew I snored, but she explained that I stopped breathing and made strangling noises all night long. That I thrashed about and was never still, and she couldn't sleep for all the noise I was making.  Even after she told me, I waited a few months before I finally went for a study, but it all made so much sense after. Now I use a CPAP religiously every night. I really can't sleep without it. I wake up every 15 minutes all night without it and can't rest at all. After 2 years I am off all of my heart medication, lost a little weight, working on going off my acid reflux medicine, and can think more clearly than I have in a long time.  I didn't happen overnight, but it does happen.

My advise to everyone is to just stick with it and keep trying things until you find what works for you!

Good Luck Everyone!

Sherry
