How Dangerous are CPAP Machines?
Peter Farrell, the Founder of ResMed, is notorious in the Sleep Medicine establishment for saying “The only way you can get injured by one of our machines, at least the low level ones, is if somebody picks the goddamn thing up and slams you over the head with it.”
But still RTs and other sleep professionals cringe at the idea of letting a patient adjust his or her own pressure settings, based on the notion that high pressures can kill you. Furthermore, they say that no amount of disclosure to the patient of possible risks will justify letting the pressures change without a doctor's say so.
What's the truth?

Randy, I'm not Neal, but as I understand it ResTrax transmits data, typically to your DME. Unless you have a friendly DME tech I don't see them willing to go to the "trouble" of sharing their data with you. Short of cultivating a relationship with a helpful, friendly DME tech (and perhaps a bribe- just kidding). The Rescan software and a data reader would be the best way to go. Or does the ResTrax use the port you would use for a direct download? If you tell us your machine specifics wee can look in the specs as to whether it has O2 recording capability. Does it have a port to plug in a pulse Ox? I have never had a ResMed that did, but I'm a complete layperson and beyond my knowledge base here. Hope you get some definitive answers.

As usual, the DME is not ccooperative with supplying data from the Resmed, so it would be great to be able to do so myself.
Is the "optional SpO2 tacking" available on the Resmed units? If so, how does it work?

Mary,
The data from the Restraxx can only be transmitted to the doc or DME as I understand it. You would need the software for your particular unit. You could always go to your local highschool and find a hacker. OOps did I just say that out loud. ;)

Thanks but I enjoy my sleep at night too much! lol Wouldn't want to be alerted at 3am that "My mask has fallen and now I can't get it up" lol Does that make me a bad RT?

Interesting, if not sad.
A sleep forum whose banner says on every page, "Sleep Apnea Forum Bringing Power to the Patient", becomes dominated by a small group of technicians discussing costly ways to keep the power with the sleep practitioners and keep the patients in the dark.
Fortunately software for the patient to monitor and control his own therapy is readily available, inexpensive, takes up little PC resources, and is easy to use.
Guess which way the trend will go.

I definatly beleive that for the most part , those folks that are interested and can comprehend their therapy that will happen, however those that are elderly or mentally disabled will not be able to do their own education, followup and tweaking... although i do think that there are definalty great technology out their that can take care of that...i really like the auto paps, that you just set the high and low pressure and just let it rip!
