According to the ENTIRE STATE LCD.

"HST scoring must be performed by an individual certified by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), or equivalent, or by a polysomnographic technician under the supervision of a RPSGT, or equivalent. RPSGTs and polysomnographic technicians must meet the standards for such individuals promulgated by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Standards for Accreditation of Laboratories for Sleep Related Breathing Disorders, and be licensed or certified by the state in which they practice, if such licensure or certification exists. The laboratory physician must review the entire raw data recording for every patient studied."

I think what you are excerpting here is the Medicare local coverage determination as it exists today. I truly believe the rulemaking and regulation as it exists today can and will flip on a dime with technological innovation and lobbying efforts from groups with interests that run counter to whatever interest groups have to date dominated. To make that more concrete, I think you're going to see the makers of Home Sleep Tests lobby Medicare successfully to ease up its regulations in favor of the HST. And Medicare is going to be happy to do it, because it will reduce its costs.
I agree with everything that you just said Mike. Lobbyist and special interest groups are degrading our entire system. This however has nothing to do with the cost of anything. Medicare and the insurance companies decided long ago how much they were willing to pay for the HST. Ultimately in this meeting, and several others like it, they decided how much your life was worth. The only differences being in what medicare territory you are in.

This excerpt is on the scoring and interpretation of HST data in the state of New York. It says that the process must be done by individuals educated in sleep. I do not think that is too much to ask.

What if lawsuit compensation were based on CMS, lobbyist, and special interest guidelines. How empty would our courts be.
