What is the gold standard for measuring effort for diagnosing Cheyne-Stokes respiration?

I would not necessarily define a particular REM epoch as being tonic or phasic based solely on the presence or absence of eye movements. I would look for an overall picture of enhanced sympathetic activity before I called it phasic, and parasympathetic activity for tonic.
