Ahhh! Tonight was our apnea support group meeting. We usually have 3 manufacturers' reps - tonight only one was present. Which was GREAT! The last half of the meeting was turned over to him to talk about their new full face mask, the FullLife. (*sigh* these darn manufacturers just have NO imagination when it comes to naming their products - they either use the same name over and over again - or the name from one "model" to the next is so similar you get them confused!) What was especially neat was that I was setting right next to his display during the meeting.
The Respironics Rep had the new PR SystemOne Auto w/A-Flex. Not that looks are important but this is an attractive device. Its not that dark gray or black of the M series, its a somewhat lighter gray w/an even lighter gray for trim. It is larger than the M Series w/the humidifier attached. Its about the same size as the Resmed S8s and S8 IIs w/humidifier attached. When complete it weighs 6 lbs. I was sitting right next to the SystemOne all night, within 2 feet. The Rep had turned it on at 15 cms and even after running for 20 minutes I could NOT hear a thing!!!! He did say it was 6 dcbs quieter than any xPAP on the market and I believe it after sitting next to it running at 15 cms during the entire meeting!!! HOWEVER, it IS rated at 30 dcbs and I've seen another brand rated at 26 dcbs so ..... still, I sat next to it and I'm telling you I couldn't hear a thing, even when I put my ear right next to it I would have sworn it was not turned on!
Respironics is quite proud of this new integrated humidifier too. It is virtually leak proof AND it at the very least rivals the new F&P humidifier for humidity control. Under a different principal but regardless how warm or cold or dry or humid your room this SystemOne provides "just" the humidity you want and need. Virtually "rain out" proof.
Respironics is really pushing their EncoreAnywhere data manager but the flashstick will work w/EncorePro 2.1 The data storage capacity is mind boggling. Up to FIVE years! Now, this data and patient access were an issue I really wanted to discuss but I wasn't able to pin the Rep down. Unfortunately, since he was the only manufacturer Rep at the meeting this time a lot of the others in attendance had the audacity to want to talk to him too. Can you imagine?? *wicked grin* He wasn't about to be pinned down about data and patient access but I haven't given up picking for more info about that. Next meeting is another shot at him.
The FullLife mask is quite interesting! Two very SMART features to it: 1] there is ONE frame that all THREE cushion sizes fit on and 2] the hose attachment is really neat! No more tugging to get the hose off, a quick snap release to take the hose off or put it on the mask. GREAT feature in my estimation. Also you really CAN put this mask on w/just one hand! AND you can just "drop" it on your chest when up to go to the bathroom rather than have to take it off. As w/any mask it may or may not fit you w/o leaks - but there are some really, really nice features to this mask!!!
But back to the SystemOne Auto: I'm really quite taken w/this APAP. For all the good it does me. They will be introducing the SystemOne CPAP next and eventually the SystemOne Bi-PAP and the more sophisticated devices. "I" need the bi-level so ...... too bad, so sad. I console myself w/the fact that so far as I've been able to determine there is no easy access to lots of data via the LCD screen. My Resmed VPAP Auto still have them all beat to heck on that aspect!!! Nyah, nyah, so THERE Respironics.
Oh, an interesting tid bit - the Respironics FitLife is, I believe, made completely in the USA. The FullLife is made in Indonesia. AND 96% of the components in a Respironics device are American-made. One of of meeting attendees was a UAW member and was right up front on asking about just how American made the Respironics products are. He asked originally about the FullLife that the Rep was demonstrating and when told it was made in Indonesia very boldly stated, forget it, he wasn't interested!!! Good on him!
