CSA is an Intrinsic Dyssomnia
This is typically a rare type of apnea that occurs not from from blocking in the throat, but from the pt's inability to make the effort necessary to pull air into the lungs. It is usually caused by the result of problems in the neurological control of breathing, or with the muscle control of breathing.
What do we know? Causes and effects? Why?
I will start. the most important thing that I have been taught about CSA is that there is always an underlying cause.

CSA is as much a central nervous system disorder as it is a breathing
disorder caused by the gas ratios in the lungs getting out of wack and sending bad messages to the brain. Or vice versa
CSA generally has an underlying cause;
--COPD(smokers disease)
--Neuromuscular disorder
--ALS-Lou Gehrigs disease
--Heart conditions(CHF)
--Over titration
-In cases with CHF NPPV has been succesful in a percentage of pts,however the problem will persist until the CHF is treated.

Hi Rock Hinkle, about over titration causing CSA ... can it occur at any pressure, let say pressure of 9, or does it have to be over a pressure = 10 ?

It can occur at any pressure, but I highly doubt that your centrals are due to overtitration at 9cmwp. Usually this happens at higher pressures. A good tech will take the pressure down to test if it is overtitrating rather than complex apnea.
