I wanted to understand the difference in treatment between the top of the line Respironics versus ResMed machines, so I got a ResMed S8 AutoSet II and used it for the first time last night. I had some problems. I woke up once having pulled the mask off. And the reason is probably related to the fact that I woke up in the morning feeling much more congested than usual -- and less well rested.

Everything otherwise -- my mask, chinstrap, pressure settings, etc. -- are the same. I'm also toying around to find the optimal humidifier setting.

I'm of course not writing off this excellent machine because I had problems with it on the first night, but can anyone give me some advice about how to resolve these problems?

GIGGLE. REAMED? You'll continue being reamed? Or you FEEL like you've been reamed? Sorry, Mike, you are just giving me all these openings .... maybe you better concentrate at getting to bed at a reasonable hour.

Its pick on Mikey day!!! LOL
tough crowd ;-)

Wow, your numbers look a lot like mine...a lot. My leak rate is less, but like I have said before, I think the Swift LT nasal pillows were made from using a cast of my nose...:>D How does your nose feel at the 2 setting on the humidifier? Hey, I love my REAMED as well.

:>D
ha ha ;-) my nose feels just fine at the two setting on the humidifier. i noticed a little bit of condensation this morning in the mask, but it doesn't bother me.

i notice the RESMED (there, I got it this time ;-) has a nifty mask leak test feature. in other words, while you're trying to get your mask adjusted to fit properly, on the screen, the machine will tell you how you're doing by how much it's leaking: poor, good, excellent . . . you guys use that at all?

Hi Mike,

Congratulations with your new machine. Resmed Autoset is standard equipment here in Denmark and I am convinced that it is a very good machine.

At a time when I had some problems with my treatment, I spoke several times with Resmed and I got some information’s that you can't find in the manual.

Unfortunately, we here in Denmark use this machine usually with an open window at 4-20 cmH2O. I think this is mainly due to the Resmed Autoset automatically corrects the pressure for leaks.

But I agree with ink, that the machine should be set to +/- 2 cmH2O compared to measured need pressure. As ink mention the machine in some cases doesn’t set up the pressure quickly enough to avoid an apnea.

But another problem is that when the pressure is set up the machine will maintain this pressure for 20 minutes. So a single leak can give an exaggerated press for 20 minutes.

Resmed is altso known to over count Hypopneas. I have spoken with Resmed about that, and they recognize this. But they told me that I should not even think about Hypopneas since the machine will always treat Hypopneas.

At one point I bought a card reader and the diagnosis program to the machine, and I can clearly see that Hypopneas always is treated well, unlike the apneas where the machine can’t do anything and just wait until the apnea is released and then set up the pressure.

So the answer from Resmed is that you only have to look at the AI.

Henning, that's a good embodiment of the "ResMed lore" I've heard here and there (about overscoring hypopneas, etc.), but never reduced to a single summary like yours. I think I'll post it as a new thread so that I and others can easily find it down the road. Thanks.

Where is the mask leak test feature? That sounds cool.

Great post.
i'll take a look later in the day and write down how to get to the nifty mask leak feature.

darnit! i didn't check my efficacy data from last night before noon, and now it's all erased/zeroed out. when i first woke up, i thought to check it, but figured it might need some time to "collect its thoughts" -- then i waited too long. is it true that the data takes some time to appear after you first wake up?
Yep, give it 15 minutes. Get up, take a leak, shave and then check your data.
In fact, your machine saves detailed data (on your data card) for 5 days. These detailed data contains far more information than you see on your screen.

You need a card reader and the ResScan software to analyze them. Then you can also save this data on your computer.

Additionally, your data card save average data for around 1 year.
