Sterile Water
Would the best water to use for our CPAP devices be sterile water. Just wondering, because I've heard from a nurse that boiling water or even using distilled water does not effectively kill microbacteria.

True, distilled water isn't sterile, but that's why it is recommended that you clean the chamber regularly. The real world isn't sterile. Why waste money on sterile water, when all you have to do is regularly clean the chamber?

I agree. We use distilled water and clean after each use with cavecide. We have absolutely 0 build up and our masks last.

Sterile water does not remove the minerals that exist in the water. It only destroys the bacteria. In order to maintain the aseptic environment, everything that the water comes in contact with must also be sterile, storage container, humidifier, etc.
Distilled water has had the mineral removed as it is made thru the process of steam.
The minerals are what causes the damage.

Who needs sterile? We do NOT live in a sterile environment. Sterility isn't even that good for us except in certain specific situations. Our own personal CPAPs and masks are NOT one of those exceptions. The distilled water is to protect our humidifier water tanks from mineral buildup. Nothing more. Sterility prevents our immune systems from building up resistance to unwelcome intruders.Cleanliness is MUCH more important and can prevent the need for sterility in our normal environment.

i'm with you -- not a germ-phobe in the least. but i was hearing (second hand granted) from some folks in the medical community that they're concerned over using anything other than sterile water, at least for nasal irrigation purposes -- something about shooting other types of water into the sinuses where bacteria can grow easily.
