thought i'd post this interesting observation by Dr. Christian Guilleminault at Stanford's sleep clinic: my wife was reluctant to use anything bigger than the nasal pillows style mask because she's claustrophobic. Dr. Guilleminault thought that many, many people with disordered breathing will identify themselves as being claustrophobic because when you have trouble breathing, it's natural to freak out over a mask being placed over the nose. His recommendation was to try the nasal mask anyway because in her case, the nasal pillows wouldn't work because of her asymmetrical nostrils. She'd get over the feeling of claustrophobia once she is getting the proper amount of air through her airway with the right CPAP mask which, he thinks in this case, might be mask she thinks would make her feel more claustrophobic (i.e., nasal cpap mask over nasal pillows mask).
