Full Face Masks Reviews by sleepycarol
CPAP masks that I have used:
I have been on cpap since August of 2007. In the beginning, I was unaware that there were numerous options when it came to mask. I was not shown any mask during my sleep study nor was any explanation given to me on why a particular mask might be better suited to me than another. I joined another forum (www.cpaptalk.com) the same day that I picked up my machine and mask. I was confused about the comments on the forum dealing with different masks and why some masks are liked over others. Being inquisitive and somewhat OCD on something things I was unable to it go that there were “other” masks out there that I hadn’t tried. Several of www.cpaptalk.com forum members remarked that the mask is the key to getting fantastic therapy.
I have tried the following masks and here are my reviews on each mask.
The Fischer and Paykel Full Face Mask HC431 This is the mask I used at my titration. I have allergies and tend to breathe through my mouth. I was not given a choice of masks at the titration and used this mask only. The doctor specified this mask on my script so I was not consulted about other masks or if I wanted to look or try them (I didn’t ask since I was unaware of “other” masks). It is a full face mask that has an under cup chin support that is great for stabilizing the mask and to keep it from riding up on your face. I especially like the fasteners that connect the headgear to the masks. Easy on and off -- a must for me since I am up several times each night. Once you have the headgear adjusted only slight adjustment should be needed each time you put the mask on. The mask seems to be well made and durable. The frame allows all three cushions to utilize the same frame. This can save money for those that are unsure about which size they need. The cushion can be replaced when necessary and since the frame and headgear is more durable reused. The headgear is a one size fits all and is adjustable. In my opinion, it is fairly quiet. My husband did not complain about the exhaust vent blowing on him during the night. In my opinion, it a comfortable mask and when adjusted properly seals good.
The Comfortfull Full Face Mask by Respironics This mask is way down the list of the mask I would consider. It does not seem as durable or as well thought out. It has ball and socket fasteners that have a tendency to break. They are hard to manipulate (in my opinion) in the dark. The frame and cushion are not interchangeable to my knowledge – meaning that you have to make sure of your fit before ordering. The headgear appears to be durable – except for the fasteners. I found it uncomfortable and was unable to get it from leaking. When I thought I had one area fixed another would start leaking. It was not comfortable to wear and didn’t seem to fit the contours of my face. I personally would not recommend this mask.
The MOJO Full Face Mask This mask looks ohhhh so comfortable!! I purchased this mask hoping that the size was correct. It was purchased brand new from www.cpapauction.com. I purchased a medium size. Overall appearances seem to me that the mask is well built and sturdy. The seal is actually a gel type material that helps to conform to the contours of your face. Unfortunately, the mask is way too big and I was unable to use it due to leaks from where it didn’t rest against my face. I would love to try this mask in a small at a later time.
The Hybrid Full Face Mask I purchased this mask gently used from www.cpapauction.com. This mask is a combination of nasal pillows and the frame is made so that a seal is around your mouth. The Hybrid is more durable I have heard than the Liberty Full Face Mask (a very similar type mask). The mouth seal has an under cup design to help keep the jaw closed. In my experience, it also makes the mask more stable. Some cut this part of the seal off carefully, but I prefer to have the under cup flap on it (I have used it both ways). There is little in the way of obstruction near your eyes and upper cheeks. For me, I did find that I had to have the straps a little more snug than with some of the other masks. It is definitely worth checking out if you are claustrophobic and like the idea of nasal pillows but are a mouth breather.

I use the Mirage (according to my DME, the Ultra Mirage "doesn't exist").......and I used the Fisher-Paykel 431. I found the Mirage to be a superior fit but possibly because I got the 431 when I first began using a machine (June 08) and didn't even realize what leaks were! When I finally figured out that the air blowing out was air that was leaking and that my 431 felt "comfortable" UNTIL I stopped the leaks.................my DME gave me a free Mirage (that I guess they were "giving away" to make room for the "non existant" Ultra Mirage?) and I apapted to it pretty quickly.............I tighten the mask, stop the leaks that way and to tell you the truth, it feels pretty comfortable with fan air blowing at me at night.

I am looking at my box right now. It states that this mask is the ULTRA Mirage full face mask!! I think your DME needs to do his homework!!

When you were using the 431 did you receive all three mask seals? Just curious. The seals interchange on the frame of the 431 and if you have the wrong size it will leak like crazy. By changing the seal you may have a better fit. I know the DME gave me only 1 seal.

I'm in between a medium and small. I received both but I never tried using the small, I thought at the time that medium was my size (as the doctor and DME tech told me) and didn't understand the tech's garbled message about how the 431 could be adapted to a different size.

Since you have the small seal I would suggest you try it and see if it works for you.
I purchased another 431 and have used both the medium and small seal -- depending how my leaks are that night. Generally I use the medium, but have on occasion have switched to the small when leaks are problem.
I don't use this mask much anymore though after settling on the Headrest as my main mask.

I don't use the 431 anymore. I now use the Mirage Quattro.
I'm hoping some people here can give me more feedback about my titration results.

Carol, I use the Fisher-Paykel HC-432 mask when I have a head cold and the OptiLife nasal mask for the rest of the time and it works very well not sure what the difference is between the 431 and 432 is but I do not get any leaks with it.

The 431 has an air cushion and the 432 has a foam cushion. Other than that they are basically the same mask.
Some have better luck with one or the other -- but personally I have never tried the 432.

BPLink, we have a couple of professionals that drop into the forum on occasion who could explain your titration results to you. Actually, I've been trying to set up a thread w/the printouts from various PSG sleep evaluations or titrations so IF you have the capability of scanning your titration results AFTER REMOVING all identifying information and would like to post them, PLEASE do so. I am tryng to figure out how to scan and transfer to PaintBrush to remove identifying information from two of my titrations to then post here. If you are not comfortable w/that or don't have a scanner, etc. feel free to type up the results you would like an explanation for and post them in a new thread w/a title that will draw attention to what you want to know, for instance: Please Explain My Titration Results or simillar.
