Hi! Ready to Rock This Forum?
Thank you for visiting the SleepGuide discussion forum. We are committed to allowing freedom of expression for our members, and that includes maintaining a safe space for people with opposing views to express themselves. We get posts from patients and pros all over the country and even the globe, so needless to say, people come with different viewpoints on Sleep Apnea. We see this diversity and variety as a real strength-- dialogue and debate are an integral part of the educational process, as well as an important tool in exploring different sides of complex issues.

SleepGuide Code of Conduct
Okay, I know we said we want you to have the freedom to express yourselves. And we do. But a few rules never hurt, right?
• Be nice! No flaming. Many posters come here for information, not to be called names.
• Please respect the different backgrounds and education of posters—especially when it comes to diverse perspectives on Sleep Apnea from patients and pros alike.
• No one needs to hear you correct them on proper grammar and spelling. Let’s talk Sleep Apnea, not the difference between affect and effect.
• Wanna talk about religion and race? Well, we don’t. We wanna talk about Sleep Apnea.
• Don’t gang up with other posters against one person. It’s not nice!
• Did I mention you should…talk about Sleep Apnea? Cool! Now get to it and have fun!

Howdy. My name is Patricia. 17 years ago I stayed overnight with my mom, and the next morning told her I thought she might have sleep apnea and should get tested. She did, I was right. She has been on a CPAP since then, but has never tolerated it well. She can't really handle it anymore now that she is on oxygen 24/7. My ex-husband also has sleep apnea, but refuses to be tested. My son was first misdiagnosed with ADHD, but later we found out he is ASD with apnea (and some other complications). Surgery made a significant difference with the apnea, but even though testing shows the apnea is gone he still has hypnea. He can't tolerate the next level of testing because of his ASD and sensory integration issues, so we are kind of at a stalemate.
Hi I am Cathy. I live in the middle of Missouri. Someone here mentioned living where the state fair is. Im not far away!! I was always a very loud snorer also I moved around so much that I could not keep sheets or mattress covers on my bed!! Every morning I woke up on a bare mattress. Finally I had a sleep study. The dr said that I was only sleeping 45 minutes a night. When I started on the cpap I woke up every day with the mask on the floor. My biggest challenge was wearing it all night. The day that my mother died I went to bed that night and I said ok mom in the hospital you kept taking off your mask and I kept putting it back on now I need you to keep mine on me. I have worn it all night every night since then!! The first time I woke up with it on my daughter was standing there looking at me. I asked her what was going on and she said I was so quiet and lying so still that she got scared and had to check on me! So wearing the mask has made an amazing difference in my sleep habits. Anyway thats more info than Im sure you wanted but there it is. If anyone wants to know anymore about me all they have to do is ask!
Hi ~ I'm Ruth from southeastern Pennsylvania and I have Obstructive Sleep Apnea. I was diagnosed after suffering a severe asthma attack due to a chemical being used during renovations in my office (April 26, 2005). I have used my CPAP (Respironics REMSTAR Pro M) every night since receiving it (June 2005). With my DME insurance, I receive a new mask every three months. It seems like every time I get a new one, the bridge of my nose breaks out ~ the network provider told me to use a gauze pad ~ which then causes air leaks. My new mask has a "whistle" to it. I called the network provider, he left a message saying that it is an air leak. With using the CPAP almost two years, I should know the difference between an air leak and a whistle.

I still don't sleep all night (even with taking Ambien-CR), but am trying to stay on a regular schedule of going to bed and getting up at the same time every day.

Thank you for bringing this site together for everyone to learn and share with each other.
Hello
My name is Rachel and I am from MN. Used my cpap for the 1st time last night. Laid in bed for over 2 hours not being able to sleep. Tried sleeping on my back but am so used to sleeping on my side, I could not do it. Finally had to get up and take a sleeping pill in order to get some sleep before work. Am hoping this gets easier!
Hi, I'm Kris. I'm in Oregon. I've been using a CPAP for about 10 years. I was first diagnosed with sleep apnea after a sleep study to help determine why I started having seizures in my mid-30s. I talk a lot, so use caution when asking ME a question! :)

Though it took a few weeks to get used to it, now I love my CPAP and can't sleep without it.

Welcome to the group. You'll find a lot of useful information and some very nice people here.

Have a Good Night!
Hi! I'm Nat, and I've been being treated for Apnea since 2001, though I clearly had it for years before that. It was my wife watching me have episodes that finally convinced me to do a study. I originally was on nasal CPAP, but later studies had me "upped" to full face Bi-level. I recently discovered that some information about what our insurance would not cover was WRONG and was able to get some nice new gear.

When I'm not sleeping, I'm a Linux systems administrator, Mac Geek, and musician of sorts- and I have the most fun when I can combine the computers and music.
Hello, I just signed up after being invited here by Mike on Twitter.

I'm Corina. I've graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada with my B.A. in English, and am currently working as a sales associate at a department store while studying Library Tech at Mohawk College. I'm 23, and am Autistic, diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, with ADHD, Anxiety Disorder and Learning Disabilities, as well as Chronic Anemia, Seasonal Allergies and Asthma.

I was a bit nervous when I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea and began C-PAP treatment in 2007, with a tonne of questions that I didn't ask because I feared I'd look stupid. So it's great that there's a place here where I can ask those questions with the problems of social anxiety.
Hi. I've been doing online research all day and it sure looks like I have sleep apnea. Found a treatment center in Northern VA and expect to make an appt next week.

The wife of my ex uses a CPAP and swears by it. I sleep on my stomach, could never sleep on my back, and am concerned about getting used to it. But my guy is more and more concerned about the breathing stops he hears during the night. So here I go.

Wish me luck!
hi every one. i`ve been with this problem now for a good while. i finaly went to see a specialist and he got me on this CPAP. But once again I`am runing into a problem, which I informed him about but it seems that I really dont have much choice`s to choose from. To clarify, the mask fits around my chin, mouth and nose with what you can call a nose guard that goes up the bridge of nose and its hooked to what looks like suction cups above each eye, with straps attatched, like a gas mask. It has to be tite, absolutaly no leaks or it will not work properly, the presure is correct and I go to sleep. But in the morning I have a headache that can rival the worst migrain. This happens each time I use this CPAP, so I stoped using it. If anyone has any advice, please let me know. Thank You
Hi Everyone
IMy name is Chloe. I was diagnosed a year ago with sleep apnea. From the moment I put my c-pap on I finally got some decent sleep. I didnt have any problem getting used to it. I would be lost with out it. If I take a nap in the afternoon I put it on also. I would never give it up.
I will need to return my cpap because I lost my insureance.& my job because of my health. So look's like I will go back to what I was doing before I got my cpap unit, that was nothing. That's life for me..
Hi. My name is Margaret. I live in Florida. I have sleep apnea. I did have the CPAP machine. The tech that came out to set it up told me that i was on a low setting and she didnt understand when i was getting a CPAP. I kept it for about 2 weeks and then gave it back, I just kept thinking about what she said.
