I have a Resmed V Auto 25 and in the results mode it lists AHI and AI. What do these numbers mean? Is it numbers of Apneas that the machine could not prevent?

AHI is apnea hypopnia index. This is the number of apneas + the number of hypopneas averaged against your sleep time. AI is the apnea index and HI is the hyponea index.

Yes but if the pap machine says AI =2 is that the number of apneas you had all night? Maybe per hour? Maybe Apneas prvented? Maybe apneas that could not be stopped with the machine? You see? I am trying to figuer out wat it means when the machine gives you these numbers as a result. Mine would be AHI 6.2 AI 1.8. Sorry if I did not explane to well.
An AI of 2 means that you averaged 2 apneas per hour thru out that night. The "norm" for those not considered to have OSA is an AHI under 5.0. An AHI of 5.0 to 14.9 is considered mild OSA and an AHI of 15 to 29.9 is considered moderate OSA, an AHI over 30 is considered severe apnea.

So w/an AHI of 6.2 you are still experiencing VERY MILD OSA. The AI is the more important of the two indexes and we like to see that below 1.0. Resmeds have a reputation for aggressively scoring hypopneas.

Yes, you are correct the AHI are apneas and hypopneas that the xPAP didn't stop. Expecting an AHI of 0.0 consistently or even most nights is unrealistic even w/xPAP. But we do want to see the AHI consistently under 5.0. The more often and the lower the better.
