got this message with the subject line "Help! Need a Dentist that take medicare for the Oral Appliance for Sleep Apnea in Chicagoland Area":
Hello Mike and Everyone,
I have had sleep apnea now for five years and found the CPAP a system I was unable to utilize. I did get a new study and approval for the oral appliance for the Sleep Apnea which has to be done by a dentist hwoever, I can't find one dentist to help me with this in Chicago, or the surrounding areas. If you know of a dentist that can assist me with this device and takes my Insurace (Medicare) please let me know as soon as possible. I am barely sleeping at night due to fear of not waking up. Thank you for everything and anything.

I'm not sure but many dentists are accepting Medicare. The patient would have to contact the dentist directly. I'll be happy to make the connection so the patient can ask - just drop me an email at libarsh@snoringisntsexy.com with contact information and I'll send it along.

YOUR PROBLEM WAS JUST AS FRUSTRATING AS MINE.
I WENT TO A DENTIST IN WAUKESHA, WI. HE SAID THAT MEDICARE NO LONGER COVERS THE MOUTH GEAR. HE WANTED $2400 FOR ONE. I WAS THEN GIVEN A DR. TO SEE. HIS NAME IS TUCKER WOODSON, FROM FROETERT HOSPITAL. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT ON THE 16TH OF MARCH TO BE FITTED FOR THE MOUTH GEAR. HE MADE THE STATEMENT, THAT I'LL BE GETING THE TOP OF THE LINE, FOR $1000. I CAN HANDLE THE $1000, BUT THE $2400 WAS WAY ABOVE MY FINANCIAL WAYS.
MOST OF THE DOCTORS REQUIRE ANOTHER SLEEP STUDY, BUT I HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT THAT. I'M SURE YOU'LL FIND HIM THE ANSWER TO ALL YOUR NEEDS.
DOCTOR WOODSON IS HIGHLY ACCLAIMED. HE IS A SURGEON, BUT HE SURE WAS AN ANSWER TO MY DREAMS GOOD LUCK IN MAKING AN APPOINTMENT. HE'S AT THE HOSPITAL, AN IS HIGHLY ACCLAIMED BY PATIENTS AND ALL DOCTORS.
GOOD LUCK
Untrue - Medicare does cover oral appliance therapy but there are some rules that the dentist has to follow because the dentist does have to be a DME supplier. Sleep studies are required by both Medicare and medical insurance and the patient does need a prescription from a physician for coverage.
I don't know that a sleep study is required after fitting a dental appliancem but I would want one to be sure my apneas were under five. If insurance would not pay for it I would be stuck relying on my subjective feelings of being better. I'm sure Larry is correct with his information.
I was referring more to a sleep test being required for insurance payment. A sleep test to validate the efficacy of the oral appliance is just good medicine.
Well, Larry, do you know if a sleep test is required when evaluating an oral appliance for insurance to pay for the appliance? It is good medicine and I wouldn't want to go without one. I believe dentists perhaps do home sleep studies or have other ways of determining effectiveness. Of course every insurance is different, every dentist is different.
But, what I said is my previous comment is "I don't know", not that is is required. I also saiid I would want one.
In some states dentists are allowed to do home sleep studies to evaluate efficacy of an appliance but nowhere allows a dentist to make the diagnosis of sleep apnea (or any other sleep diagnosis). In New Jersey, for instance, dentists are not allowed to do a home sleep study even to evaluate the continuing effectiveness of an appliance.
In every case, a physician MUST make the initial diagnosis of sleep apnea and prescribe an oral appliance. Qualified dentists are encouraged to be the ones to design, fit and titrate the appliance to maximum effectiveness although physicians are not prohibited from doing this as well. Specially-educated dentists are the ones most qualified to handle any side effects and determine if a patient is suitable for an appliance.
