Can using a CPAP machine cause a bacterial infection or sinus irritation? I've been sneezing and have had an itchy throat for the past 3 or 4 weeks. By the way, I live in Taiwan which is sub-tropical. Right now it is constantly damp with a high of 16 degrees.

Thanks for any help or suggestions you can give me.

Kim, I personally don't see how a CPAP could cause an infection unless maybe your humidifier water or filter were contaminated.  We do hear from a fair number of people who do come down with infections of their sinuses, sore throats, or colds.  I would clean my humidifier tank and change my machine filter.  If you're having colored discharge or have a fever, or just feel you need to go see the doc.  We usually recommend using the CPAP while you're sick unless a doc says "no".

Good luck,  keep us posted.

Thanks for getting back so quickly with my question.

The ResMed rep came to my house and checked both of my S9 tubes. One is the regular kind. He said it was cracked in many places and it had bacteria. He thought it probably was the cause of all my colds. I have since thrown it out. The other tube is the ClimateLine heated air tube. He said it looked okay except it did have a slight tear. I should put tape on it to make it last longer. So now, to keep the tube from cracking,  I have to turn the machine around so the tube go straight out - not at a curve.

The ResMed manual says to clean the filter every months and then after 6 months, throw it away. He said no, put in a new filter every month.

He also told me that ResMed has just come out with a new gel mask for women. He said my nasal mask is designed to fit a man's face so it is too big for me and that I might be more comfortable with the new size.

Thanks again for your help.

It's not been very long since you posted, Kim.  Any improvement?  Glad the ResMed rep was of some help.  I change my filters monthly (have an S8), and yes, I hear those climate line hoses are fragile.  Good luck, keep us posted.

Hi Mary,

I haven't been able to use the CPAP since the ResMed rep came because I want to be sure I'm completely over the cold. I don't want to infect the clean tube. I went to the doctor tonight and he said maybe I can use it tomorrow.

It's amazing to me how I went for most of my life without a CPAP and could sleep the whole night through without a problem. Now, I wake up every couple of hours and I'm starting to feel that old tiredness and fogginess again. How quickly we forget life before the CPAP! Thanks again Mary for all your support.
