awaking with burning sensation in arms and across the chest

Hello,

Just found this website. It has been helpful.  I awaken biting my tongue, and, since I recently had a head injury have experienced a few siezures.  I also grind my teeth.  Now, lately I have been waking in the middle of the night with severe burning sensation in my arms and it spreads across my chest.  I also am finding that I am breathing much faster than normal.  I suffered my entire life with nightmares until the recent head injury.  Could it be that I am still having nightmares, but, don't remember them now?  Maybe I am awakening from one in a panic attack?  Could I be having a panic attack in my sleep?

Mary, welcome to the site, Sorry to hear of your problems.  I imagine you could be having panic attacks in your sleep, but think they would probably wake you up.   I would guess that your sleep changes have more to do with the head injury. Recovery can be lenghty and some things can change, like the lack of nightmares.

Are you having any symptoms of sleep apnea- someone observing that you stop breathing in your sleep, waking up many times diring the night perhaps gasping for air, having to use the bathroom many times during the night, or excessive daytime sleepiness?

A simple sports mouth guard available from Walmart may help with the tongue biting.  The symptoms of burning pain across your chest and arms should be checked out by a physician. Never ignore chest pain.  The breathing faster than normally could be from anxiety.

Good luck, please keep us posted on your progress.

I am not a medical professional and put these ideas out as a possibilities.  I hope you are discusssing your symptoms with your neurologist or whoever is treating you for the head injury.

Thanks for replying.  I do awaken frequently during the night.  I wake up gasping for air, and, feel the burning.  I am also having psychotic episodes that seem to be happening more often. Confusion has been a big problem.  I waited several months for an MRI on my brain.  Do you think waiting so long affected the MRI results? I was told my brain was fine.  Also, I am in the middle of a lupus flare, something I am unfamiliar with. But, it seems I've had lupus, untreated since 2005. (I have tested positive for it a million times and still no treatment. WHY?)  This is very difficult to figure out.  I also fell about two months ago and still have neck pain from that and the head injury.  I was afraid to go to the hospital both times.  Oh, I do feel like I have to urinate many times during the night, yet, I usually have no relief until late morning (urinary retention).  I've tried mouth guards.  I remove them in my sleep and then can't find them the next morning. Pretty weird, huh?

I need to add something.  I have been craving caffeine like mad. And, it makes me feel better.  It makes my thoughts more clear and relieves the headache pain.  Hmmmmm...

Mary, if you have not seen a doctor after this head injury, your symptoms of gastric reflux, and of sleep apnea you need to be seen.  I guess you were seen at one time since you had an MRI.  No one can treat you for  sleep apnea until you get a diagnosis.  I don't know why you are not being treated for your lupus, you will have to ask your doctor.

It does sound liike you have some form of a sleep disorder breathing, but only a doctor can diagnose that.

Thanks Mary,

I'm seeing my doctor soon about all  of this.  Hopefully things will be resolved. I appreciate your reply.

WOW! Today I had a realization-an explanation for so many things that have happened to me and made me seem (or be) psychotic!  I have been sleepwalking for many months! This due to traumatic events that took place beginning with a big undertaking-a move to another state which I did by myself and then the death of my fiance  only two months later. (He'd caught up with me a month later.) Shortly after he died I'd sustained the severe head injury (I think three months ago) which only made this terribly worse.(I say things got worser and worser.)  It explains why I got paranoid being in my own home.  Things had been moved around and misplaced. One day I would clean up my house and what seemed like only hours later it was in disarray.  I thought someone had been coming in and doing this.  My bolt lock had been broken which scared me, thinking someone was trying to get me.  I probably did this myself, in my sleep, attempting to get out because. When I realized this today, it actually nauseated me.  But, when I put everything together, since my move, it explains almost everything. It explains why people were treating me differently, and why I was so afraid identity theft was happening with me, but, no one actually stole my money.  I was changing every account myself, following my head injury in some kind of sleep state, and, now coming out of it, I can see it all. Boy, it also explains my insomnia.  I know I'm replying to myself, here, but I'm not sure how this site works, yet. Maybe this will help someone else.  I hope so.

Boy, it also explains my insomnia, and mishap after mishap.  I have been sleepeating, too, because I have awakened numerous times with food in my mouth and not known why.  I also wondered why I was gaining weight and my groceries dwindling. Recently, I tested myself just to see if could be happening, and, it was true.  I've been doing this to myself-ome kind of self-induced psychosis. Sorry if this is disturbing.
But maybe someone else is suffering, too.  I hope it might be able  to help someone else.
I'm posting this wrong. It might be a duplicate, but, I don't know how to write these, yet.(It's also long.) Mary G. said:
