Does anyone know of a company that makes masks and headgear to fit a small child?

The Resmed Kidsta is the only mask made specifically for kids.

I have not had very good luck with this mask. I prefer to use the petite size masks when working with children. Does your child still have his/her toncills?

Yes tonsills and adenoids out when about 4 years old. We had no problems for a couple years and then the sleep porblems came back. Child is 14 but about the size of an 8 year old. Has very small nose and facial features. Also has Down Syndrome so everything is really crowded  due to the back of their neck being somewhat flat. Also have trouble with headgear as a child with D.S. has ears a little lower on the head than usual.  We had a very small mask several years ago and she used this for about about 1 1/2 years.  We have not found anything that has worked since then. Do not want something that has to be worn unbearably tight. Not only is this uncomfortable but it can also cause malformation of the facial bones in growing children. Thanks for the info on the Resmed Kidsta. Even our respiratory therapist has not mentioned this one.

Hi, I'm a registered sleep tech with fairly extensive pediatric experience over the past several years.  For small children, I usually still find the tried and true Respironics Profile Lite Child or Youth mask to be the best and most comfortable fit.  It's a soft gel mask that seals well without having to be strapped tightly.  The headgear that comes with it isn't the best for smaller children and Down's kids, though.  You may want to order a regular Respironics headstrap instead of using the one that comes with the Profile Lite.

There are only a few masks, such as Profile Lite and Kidsta (which is a smaller size version of ResMed's Vista) specifically tested and approved for use on pediatric patients.  For small children I find the Kidsta rather heavy and bulky, and the straps are a bit large and complicated, too.  It works great for older kids though, especially bigger kids, and for some reason, boys, so it may work for y'all.

Another option that's specifically peds tested and approved is the Respironics Comfort Lite 2 system, which gives you the choice of using either nasal pillows or a simple cushion that fits over the nose.  It doesn't have to be strapped tightly at all because the headgear fits over the top of the head, sort of like a miner's hardhat only padded and of course much more comfortable.

Also, you may want to contact Respironics directly.  Without exception, the Respironics folks I've dealt with over the years have been tremendously supportive and helpful.

Best of luck finding a solution to this problem.  Please post back and tell us how it's going.  I have a special place in my heart for Down's kids.  They are my all-time favorite patients!  God bless y'all and take care.

Keep in mind, headgear can be purchased separately and scissors and velcro can make fitting a breeze. Even if velcro strips have to be used in place of clips it is easy enough to mark the straps where the velcro should go once the proper fit has been established.
