Hello - anyone out there with a Bi-PAP machine? When I was first diagnosed with OSA I concentrated my research on CPAP machines (also how I found thid site) Looking back through the most informative sites, there doesn't seem to be a lot about Bi-PAP. Any advice on which machine to look at? Mask? Thanks!

Hello Doranne,

My first question would be why a BiPap machine?  Has the dr. prescribed a BiPAP or is it something which you think might be more helpful?

A BiPAP machine is essentially a more sophisticated auto CPAP machine.  A BiPAP basically allows the setting of both the inhalation and exhalation pressures which makes for a more natural breathing experience.  In particular, when the exhalation pressure is reduced significantly, it provides for a more natural and comfortable breathing experience as opposed to the constant pressure of a normal CPAP machine.

Of course there are many different types of BiPAP's - standard, auto and auto SV(basically helps the user breath).  Knowing what you need in terms of care will help determine the type of machine you need.  Also, any mask that can be used with a CPAP can also be used with a BiPAP.

Firstly, I would understand why it is you need a BiPAP as the cost is about double a regular CPAP.  Nowadays, an a top of the line auto CPAP can do similar things as a BiPAP.  So it is important to understand the reasons behind the switch and the differences of each type of machine.

I have bought a lot of equipment from www.thecpapshop.com.  They are always helpful and can provide you an explanation and determine which equipment is best for you.

They also have a free downloadable ebook which has great information on both cpap's and bipaps.  http://www.thecpapshop.com/content/free-cpap-ebooks

I hope this helps

Thanks for the reply, and information, Terry. The doctor prescribed the BiPAP machine. He said that I responded much better to the BiPAP than the CPAP. Surprised me, too. I was leaning towards the Resmed S9 Escape (CPAP) and the Mirage Vista nasal mask. (Glad to know that I can use any mask with the machine) And I see that Resmed has the S9 VPAP Auto to investigate.

Thanks again,

Doranne

Whew!!! Thank goodness you weren't scripted a CPAP and asked for the Resmed S9 Escape!!!!! That is a bottom of the line, entry-level CPAP providing absolutely no data of value!!!!

Go w/the Resmed S9 VPAP Auto or the Resmed S8 VPAP Auto 25.

Or w/the PR SystemOne BPAP or BPAP Auto.

I was able to talk to the DME supplier today, and ordered the Resmed S9 VPAP Auto, with the humidifier and the Mirage Vista mask. They will be in next week, so the next phase begins. Thanks!
