Smart Card
I read with interest the discussion about Smart Card. I have used the REMstar-Plus Machine for several years. I am not aware of any data card associated with it. In the past when a technician has visited my home in response to a issue with my mask, they looked at the machine and said it is working fine. Is there a card in my machine? My doctor has never asked for information from a card. Thanks!

Unfortunately your machine does not record any useful data except how many hours you have used the machine and probably does not have a card since it appears that you have the older tank style plus machine. The card fits into a slot on the machine -- on the M series it is on the back -- have you looked for this?

Marvin, if you've had the machine for several years, you're probably entitled to a new one that your insurer/medicare will pay for. the machines today are exponentially better than the ones of just a few years ago because the technology is moving very fast. be sure to look into this. i'd recommend either the respironics m series with a-flex, or the resmed S8ii with EPR (expiratory pressure relief). let us know what you decide.

Insurances will seldom replace a CPAP device earlier than 5 years unless one needs to be moved up to a bi-level or the current CPAP dies, is damaged or needs repair beyond the cost of replacing it.
The being said whilst both Respironics and Resmed devices produce equally effective therapy the Resmeds can't be beat for amount of data easily available via the LCD screen. The Resmed integrated humidifier is of much better design and much easier to use, dissamble and reassemble and doesn't require the PITA power brick the Respironics do. When packed for travel the Resmed is 1 lb lighter in weight.
However, even Resmed produces less than fully data capable CPAPs. The Resmed S8 Compact, S8 Escape and S8 Escape II are NOT fully data capable. Just because a CPAP has a data card or data card slot does NOT mean it is fully data capable!!
The Resmed S8 Elite II w/EPR, Resmed S8 II AutoSet and previous models, the Resmed S8 Elite w/EPR and Resmed S8 Autoset Vantage are all fully data capable.
No Respironics device w/Plus in the name is capable of any more than compliance data only. The Respironics M Series Pro w/C-Flex, Respironics M Series Auto w/C-Flex and Respironics M Series Auto w/A-Flex ARE all fully data capable. The pre-M Series Respironics can be discerned from the M Series by the placement of the integrated humidifier. The pre-M Series integrated humidifier fits on the front of the xPAP and the pre-M Series is larger than the M Series. The M Series integrated humidifier fits on the side of the xPAP. The pre-M Series is MUCH the better device than the M Series.

Judy, by that last sentence, are you saying that the pre-M Series respironics cpaps are better the the newest M series units? that would seem counter-intuitive to me.

Yep, If you ask someone that has compared both it is almost always the consenses that the pre-M series is better built and many have stocked up on the "tank" (as it is affectionately called) so that they are guaranteed not to have to rely on the M series.
I have only used the M series so do not have actual experience with the tank.
