The second week in April of 2009 I went to my primary care doctor with a concern over my weight. I have gained nearly 40 pounds since school has started. Not good, especially when you are already obese. She ran some blood work and found that my blood sugar was high and I have diabetes. I was told I could probably control it with diet as my blood sugar levels are just over the line enough that if I don't do something fairly quick I am headed down a bad path. I have a family history of diabetes (mom and aunt) and my kids were all large at birth.

I know often times, untreated sleep apnea leads to weight gain, which can be difficult to lose, even if you are compliant with therapy.

I thought others may enjoy the support that we could find and have a safe place to discuss topics related to weight loss, nutrition, dieting, and have a place where we can have fun doing it.

These are two titles I've recently read. I'm getting some new ideas about what to eat because I am morbidly obese.

I am very interested in joining as I have gained several pounds due to my sleep apnea.....This is a great idea:)
I eat because of a lot of reasons -- mainly not about hunger. Food is my best friend. It doesn't let you down, is readily available morning, noon, and night, taste good -- especially the pastas, breads, and sweets, soothes and comforts you, keeps you busy, list can go and on!!

I have major food allergies (along with environmental allergies). I am allergic to peanuts, wheat, beef, pork, chicken, coconut, lemon, potatoes, legumes, corn, soy, milk protein, almonds, tomatoes, strawberries, coconut, among others. Most of my allergies are in the moderate to severe range. I didn't even try to diet as it was too overwhelming. I have been told if I cut these foods out I would feel better and have less joint pain and stomach problems.

Well, I decided when I went to the doctor on April 17, 2009 that if I didn't do something I was not going to be around for my great-grandkids. My oldest granddaughter is 14 -- so great grandkids is still a ways off - but I want to be around for a long time to enjoy the grands and greats!!

I talked with the doctor and she pushed for me to do what she describes as a liquid diet. Actually calling it a liquid diet is a little confusing. It is more like Medifast diet. You drink a liquid protein shake for breakfast -- it is made with a packet of mix and 4 or 5 ounces of water. Shake it and drink up. Only trouble I had trouble gagging it down and it burned my mouth and throat and stayed that way for several hours. It has coconut in it and don't know if that was a trigger or what. Also, caused severe nausea. At lunch you are allowed a "pudding" made with 4 to 5 ounces of water and powdered mix. Shake well it will thicken. Eat it (very bland and virtually no taste), along with a 1 cup of select veggies. Supper is 3 to 5 oz. of fish (depends on the type) and another cup of select veggies. No allowed snacking that I am aware of. Seasonings and cooking methods are restricted. Several vitamin supplements need to be taken.

The first day of this diet -- I knew in my heart I was not going to be able to diet in that manner. Doctor had warned me that the first 3 or 4 days will find you having severe stomach cramps and hunger pangs. After this initial "break in" it will settle down. My doctor was able to lose 80 pounds by sticking to this diet. She started the diet last spring and except for a few special occassions still eats the diet food in order to keep the weight off -- if she eats regular food -- she gains. She is a big supporter of this diet. Each box of "food" cost $25.00 for 7 packets of "meals". Each vitamin supplement cost $14.00 (there are 3 bottles). This diet is called the Ideal Protein Diet.

If you are interested in this diet the website is www.idealprotein.com.

I decided I would try to modify my diet myself. I, also, recognize I need help and am unable to do it alone. The next day I went to the store and purchased some SlimFast. I tried it and it is better than the expensive mix from the doctor and you get 2x as much for a meal. I drink one SlimFast shake in the morning. About 2 to 2 1/2 hours later, I will eat a couple of small pieces of beef jerky. I can keep it in my desk and it doesn't need cooking or be kept cool. I limit the amount I eat to a small amount -- but that small amount staves off hunger until I eat at noon. At noon, I eat a salad. I like spring greens and will eat approximately 3 to 5 ounces of greens with a couple of cherry tomatoes, a teaspoon of bacon bits, and spray salad dressing. The spray contains 1 calorie per spray and I can use 10 sprays and am good for the whole salad. Approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours after lunch, I will eat a SlimFast or other low calorie protein snack bar (limit the calorie intake for this item to no more than 150 calories). For supper, I will eat approximately 5 ounces of lean meat and another salad or 1/2 small baked potato.

This seems to satisfy me and I haven't been hungry. Last week I lost 9 pounds for the week. I did binge on two nights. We went out to eat and one night we went to Golden Corral and I pigged out on meats. I ate meats -- a steak and salmon. I had a small piece of melon. That was my supper the meat and melon. Another night we went to Country Kitchen I ordered a 5 oz. steak and 1/2 small baked potato. Both nights I was filled and actually felt stuffed with what I ate.

I don't know if I can keep the weight coming off eating this way -- but I do not feel deprived and if I know I am going to eat something more "fattening" I cut elsewhere.

I do feel that I am off to a good start though.
I've tried a wide variety of diets, and while all have worked, I haven't been able to stick to any of them for long. The best I ever felt on a diet was on the atkin's diet, but who can live like that? The easiest diet to stay on was weight watcher (points system) but I hated having to spend $ every week to go to meetings (and I won't stick with it without the accountability of a meeting).

My plan now is to start adding in exercise. It's the one thing I've never done and always avoided. But I splurged and bought a treadmill and now also bought the 30 Day Shred DVD that a bunch of bloggers I read are doing. I'm going to give those a try and see if I can at least build a little muscle. Then I've promised to start weightwatchers again with my mother in law for mother's day. She has to lose weight to be eligible for back surgery, so I'm doing this to help her, but really it will be good for me too.

100 pounds lost will put me at about 180, which sounds heavy, but I looked AWESOME at 180 in college. I'd be perfectly happy there again.

My main motivation is to be able to get up and down to play with my 3 year old son, possibly be able to get my PCOS under control so I can have another child, and buy new clothes!
Amott1973, I bought Jillian's 30 day shred and the spot reducing DVD. I LOVE it, am so stinkin' sore. Which means I am going to lose weight and feel toned. I start out in the morning with the dvd and I tell myself that AT LEAST I did that one thing for myself. It raises my self-esteem enormously! I am eating a balanced diet of carbs and protein. I know how to eat healthy, I just have to DO IT! Hang in there!!! I will too.
