With Chin Strap Data Results
bought the Respironics top of the line chin strap, and recorded some better leak results the night I used it than usual -- to be exact, it was the Respironics Premium Chinstrap i believe:

But the most two important data points aren't in the report. 1) Did you feel any better, weighed against the increased hassle of wearing a chinstrap? and 2) Did your wife sleep any better?

As I think about the discussion on Smart or Dumb AutoPAPs and look at your data, I can't help but feel that a) you would do just as well with a fixed pressure of 10; b) Your pressure range is so small that it seems useless; c) It appears that the device wants to head for a pressure lower than 10, but the set minimum won't allow it.
Your thoughts?

This is only one night's data. I think the machine at times struggles to get above 12 but it can't. I'll look at more than one night's data and see what I can conclude.

Here's my data over a more representative sample of time, from January to present. my conclusion from this is that if anything, the pressure range should be widened on top -- beyond 12 to 13 or 14. any thoughts?

In my viewpoint, if your doctor prescribed a pressure range between 8 and 15 cmH2O, I think s/he would be very wise ;-)

perfect example of how a patient keeping up with his own therapy can make a difference. i will discuss this with my doctor, and figure out along with him whether to widen the range both at top and at bottom.

I began using a chin strap after realizing my dry-mouth was caused by a "slack jaw" allowing the pressure to bypas the esophagus. After that the down time (where the CPAP registered as out of use but running) decreased dramatically. After using the machine for 18 months I see stats for 3,700 hours machine use and 3,640 hours of breathing therapy. That is a 1.58% failure rate. OR- a 98.42 success rate. I am quite satisfied with that statistic. My pressure is set at a constant 10 cm but flexes lower only when exhaling.

Has anyone considered using a mandibular advancement device (MAD) to not only correct for the open mouth, but to also open the airway more effectively? I use the MAD to clear my airway, and it immediately resolved my UARS. I believe those with severe apnea sometimes use both the MAD as well as the xPAP.

8-15cmwp I don't see why you would set it to this range. This software is new to me, and I still could be reading it wrong. In 4 months did he hit 13 once? If the object of therapy is to keep the pressure as low as possible why would you prescribe a wide open range like this. In my opinion the data does not support it.
