Who can set up PAP devices
I question has come to my attention. Who is legally able to do an initial set up of a patient to a prescribed PAP device? Some vendors used non licensed technicians. Who underwrites them? If a there is a licensed medical professional on staff, is he or she supposed to set the machine as precribed before allowing a technician to do the set up? Is he or she responsible for what the technician does? Mistakes and all? If a technician sets up a patient and programs the PAP device incorrectlyt and the patient is harmed, who is liable? The licensed medical professional on staff or the company as a whole?

Governing body? Thanks to a tech at an a.w.a.k.e meeting he found that when I switched from a nasal pillow to a full face mask the pressure needed to be recalibrated for it.There was nobody at the supply company who was aware of this . Liability accountadility credibility structure are all lacking .All I know was I did not feel good and I did not know the people who should know didnt either .Good Sleep. Chris

The answer likely varies by state, since regulation of Durable Medical Equipment companies is a state, not federal prerogative. In NY where I live, i don't think there's a requirement for the DME company even to have a licensed medical professional on staff. So here i think it's pretty clear that the company itself would be liable.

In Michigan, my local DME provider MUST have a licensed RRT on staff. HOWEVER, they are allowed to have "supervised" staff set up the PAPs.

Only A Respiratory Therapist can set the prescribed setting on a cpap or Bipap per the state of Ca, and has the knowledge to give you proper mask fit

Are you saying that only Rts have the knowledge to fit masks in Ga. I know some pretty good Rpsgts down there that would argue with you about that. Ga, Tn, Nc, and SC have pretty made themselves the sleep capitols with all of the state funded schools they have.
