Hi all, I was diagnosed with SDB 5 years ago, but I found sleeping with the CPAP the worst night's sleep of my life. Given the alternative of 3 surgeries, I chose no treatment. I take adderall for ADD, so I'm usually fine. Then about 6 weeks ago, it all fell apart. I'm waiting for appt with a new really good sleep doctor, but have seen a couple other doctors recently who blamed stress. Ugh. So my questions are, in the absence of any lifestyle changes, is there anything that could exacerbate this condition so significantly? And is it just "status quo" or whatever for the report to mention parkinsonism or other neuromuscular disorder should be considered?

One word: Allergies

I had the opposite experience....I am a big guy...diabetic and have had borderline high blood pressure....used a CPAP though have always struggled with it.....including going off of it at times but generally using it because the headaches and fatigue during the day (even using provigil to stay awake) was unlivable....

So...I went on a short term dietary restriction (30 days) that had me on low calorie diet, high water intake, no carbs other than some fruit. A strange thing happened....within 1-2 weeks my apnea nearly disappeared.....to the point i felt better without the CPAP.....during the 30 days on the diet...no apnea to speak of. within a few weeks of normal eating the apnea came back but not quite as severe (was not eating as bad as before).

I have dieted a few times since...while restricting eating my apnea is gone...and as I learn to eat better (though not restricting food types) the apnea has not nearly as bad....and I know the weight loss has helped but I have enough evidence that I must be eating somethign that causes swelling in the airway...

For you severe apnea folks...might want to check it out...I still have not figured exactly what it is that causes my issue though I am pretty sure it is a carb or dairy based food(s)...just not sure which and struggle getting myself to figure it out all the way (us big guys hate to say goodbye to a food...it is like losing a friend).

Make me wonder why they don't look into allergies as part of apnea treatment...not saying it is the only reason for apnea but it appears to be a contributing factor...
this looks promising have you tried to keep a food diary to see some trending taking place

@John Hagler,

Have you been examined for GERD and LPRD? LPRD or laryngopharyngeal (throat and voice box) reflux is somewhat different than GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease. In most cases, you won’t feel any heartburn or the classic symptoms associated with GERD.

The common complaints of LPRD include one or many of the following: chronic throat clearing, postnasal drip, hoarseness, cough, throat or ear pain, lump in the throat, difficulty swallowing, tightness or pain with swallowing. You don’t have to feel any heartburn, either.

A doctor should have performed an endoscopic evaluation of your airway.
Hey, Rooster,

What type of doctor/specialist would do an endoscopic evaluation of your airway?? ENT? Pulmonologist? Gastroenterologist?
