This week I'll be taking my CPAP through airport security for the first time. It's small enough to fit in my carry-on backpack. Just wondering if I am required to remove it from the pack and place it in a tray like I do with my laptop, or do I leave it in the pack and run it through the scanner?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

From what I heard/read, you are supposed to take it out, etc.

Last (First) trip with my CPAP, I didn't take it out of my backpack....TSA then had to figure out how to get it out of my backpack and test it. The first time through the TSA person was nice about it, and nothing came of it.

But, on the way back the other TSA person wasn't so nice about it, though not as bad as past encounters with TSA. And, later he told me that I need to take it out before sending it through in the future.

The Dreamer.
Just take the machine out of the bag and put it in a tray by itself. The TSA will swab it. I haven't been able to figure out why CPAP machines are swabbed rather than just x-rayed.
Keep in mind that your Cpap does not count as your carry on bag. The rules for this are found at http://airconsumer.dot.gov/rules/20011029.htm I also have other tips on travel at http://cpapcritic.com on the travel page.
I just traveled with mine for the first time last weekend. I was impressed with the TSA folks. They knew exactly what it was and it was no hassle. I just took it out of my bag (like a laptop) and put it in a bin by itself (with the power cord). The bag can go directly on the belt, like any other carry on item with the hose and mask inside still. The X-Ray guy saw what the machine was as it went through the scanner and called for someone else, who came over and told me she was going to go run a "test" on it. She took it to her kiosk thing and swabbed it, and was back before I had my shoes back on. Easy peasy.

If I had the choice I don't think I would go through the "expert" security line, as I used to do, just because it holds up the line a couple of minutes as they wait for someone to come over and get it to be swabbed. Just a little consideration for others I guess.

Currently I am looking for a backpack that I can use to carry the machine and hose/mask etc. instead of the Respironics case I have. Just more comfortable, and I might fit all of my carry on stuff in one bag.
if you find the perfect carry on bag, would be interested in hearing what you bought.
