I saw a studio prescreening of this movie today. In one scene the 8-year old boy character is snoring to rattle the walls. The other characters think it is funny and several ladies in our audience cackle loudly.

As a society, are we very slow to learn?

As a society, it's going to be a very long time before snoring is considered a sign of disease and not a joke.

look at morbid obesity -- as a society, don't we still consider that a joke in some ways? Chris Farley's brand of humor comes to mind.
Yes, and some joke. A recent news release stated that obesity and its health related problems cost the US Health Care System MORE than smoking and smoking related problems. Next, it would be interesting to see the Health Care cost analysis for alcohol use. Its always interesting to read of the benefits of alcohol use.
Good point about the mobidly obese. We don't even know what obesity is. A friend had a heart attack last year. After recovery from surgery he was telling a group of us that the doctor told him he was obese. The group protested that he was a little overweight but definitely not obese. Later he gave me his statistics and I calculated that his BMI was 35 (obese is 30 and up).

Another story I like to tell is about a 17-year old at our church. His doctor told him he is out of shape and needs to lose weight. When I tell this, people who know him protest that he is slim. Well, he is 5' 11" and 160 lbs which gives a BMI of 22 - normal weight. But what the doctor told him is that he has a belly for a 190-lb man. The doc went on to explain about the dangerous visceral fat that he has around his midsection organs.

We do need to get to the point in our society of recognizing overweight conditions, particularly in children, as a diseased state. And of course, we also need to be more aware of the symptoms of SDB.

We also need to remember to look for the humor in everything no matter how serious it is. Laughter is good therapy.
I agree with you on that Rock and think that nothing is off limits when it comes to humor: not disease, not death, not religion.

If I have cancer, I hope my family and I can joke about it. However, we do that with a background of knowing how serious the situation is. I joke about sleep apnea even though it has had a major negative impact on my life.

My complaint about the "Spy" is not about humor. My complaint is that the actors, writers, producers and 99% of the audience are ignorant of what the child's condition really means. Awareness of SDB is badly lacking.

In the movie, I think the humor of snoring would have been appropriate had the guffawing been followed by the sister saying, "That snoring is hilarious, but we need to wake him up and get him to wear his CPAP mask so his health doesn't decline."

(Now you know why Hollywood trashes all my scripts.)

I agree Banyon, Sleep awareness is very lacking. Follow me on this sleep deprived journey if you will................

Had the lawyer of the paycheck known about the seriousness of SDB he would have told his paycheck. The paycheck seeing a larger liability would have complained to the director. the director upon hearing about SDBs from the paycheck would have immediately passed this information to the wrighting team. The wrighting team would have screamed about "creative freedom" or something along those lines. Eventually, since it came from the paycheck, would have made the changes. The trailer you saw would not have been made. Therefore you would not have seen it. It would have at least been different. You would not have started this post. And today while who knows how many hundreds or thousands of searches were done on "The Spy Next Door". One person may have not stopped and actually read this post.....and others....thus becoming aware. So in essence them not being aware might have helped someone else become enlightened. Great Post banyon! We should do one on avitar!

I plan to see Avatar next week. For sure, I will look to see if they gave the characters good jaw structure. :)
