I've heard that teeth grinding and sleep apnea are related, but I don't understand the connection. Does one cause the other?

I see bruxism(teeth grinding) in almost all of my osa patients. It seems to have to do with the arousals. As they wake up they grit their teeth.
i have had dentists telling me since i was a kid that i had a teeth grinding problem. but no one ever suggested i had a breathing problem. should dentists suggest a sleep test for their patients with teeth grinding?
That's a great question. I am not sure what the % are, but they have to be high. Like I said if I had a pt with OSA that DID NOT grind their teeth I would be surprised.
